Pavement Whispers: Volume 134 August 8

From whispers of the inaugural Specialty Coffee Festival to chicken and waffles for breakfast, The Weekend Edition is always on the search for the latest news in Brisbane, dedicated to ensuring its readers are in the know. When we put our ears to the pavement this week, this is what we found out …

Deathproof Cafe
Since its opening in March this year, Deathproof has resurrected New Farm’s nightlife in the confines of its neon-clad walls, pleasing palates with easy bar eats of wings, tacos, burgers and more alongside a killer selection of cocktails and beers. As of Tuesday August 15, Deathproof will be kickstarting your heart from early in the morning, with a new cafe offering from 6:00 am Tuesday to Sunday. Fonzie Abbott will be supplying the beans (with free coffee happening all opening day long) and breakfast bites will include the likes of smashed avocado on toast and chicken and waffles served until midday.

Specialty Coffee Festival
Ah, coffee. That magical bean. That giver of life. That aroma that makes our heart race. That liquid gold that makes each morning just that little bit better. It deserves an entire day dedicated to it, right? The heroes at Wolff Coffee Roasters agree, which is why they’re planning Brisbane’s inaugural Specialty Coffee Festival. On Saturday September 2 Wolff’s Big Bad Wolff Espresso Bar in Hendra will host the festival, in conjunction with the Queensland Aeropress Championships. Coffee farmer Alejo Castro of Volcán Azul will be travelling from Costa Rica for the event, giving festival goers an insight into where their beans come from, alongside free cupping forums, roastery tours and demonstrations, and roasting experiences delivered by Alejo and Peter Wolff. Free coffee will be poured for those who purchase a reusable coffee cup on the day, which can be enjoyed with coffee-centric treats or eats from a number of food trucks including Queen of Pops, Mr Burger and That Greek Truck. To top it all off, for every coffee beverage sold at the event, 50c from each cup will go to Primary School of San Francisco de Grecia, Costa Rica. For full details head to our Event Guide.

Lady Marmalade
Fans of Stones Corner’s beloved Lady Marmalade will be happy to hear that after a major renovation, the cafe is reopening on Thursday August 24. Owners Sonja and Howard Searle have been working hard on the expansion, taking over the shop next door to make the cafe even bigger and better than before. The renovation has drawn on the building’s history, featuring retro signs and original brick walls discovered during the refit, and now sees the cafe serving up to 60 patrons from its sparkling new kitchen. With the new look comes a new spring menu from chef Sam Axton (ex-Au Cirque), as well as a liquor licence, with beer connoisseur Matt Kirkegaard designing the craft-beer menu.
