Pavement Whispers: Volume 202 December 11

From whispers of riverside wine bars to Japanese pastry sensations, The Weekend Edition is always on the search for the latest news in Brisbane, dedicated to ensuring its readers are in the know. When we put our ears to the pavement this week, this is what we found out …

ARC Dining and Wine Bar
The openings keep coming at Brisbane’s booming Howard Smith Wharves, with the riverside precinct set to welcome ARC Dining and Wine Bar next Monday December 17. Situated at the New Farm-end, the Anna Spiro-designed venue will first unveil its 140-seat ARC Wine Bar on Monday led by acclaimed sommelier Ian Trickle (ex-Aria Brisbane), with the 100-seat ARC Dining due to open in February 2019. ARC Dining and Wine Bar has recruited an all-star team for its kitchen and front-of-house team, led by acclaimed Queensland chef Alanna Sapwell, who has just wrapped up at Sydney’s multi-award-winning fish-focused eatery Saint Peter. For ARC, Alanna is broadening the spectrum of proteins and other ingredients at her disposal, implementing a top-to-tail approach to get the most out of whole carcasses. Pasture-raised, chemical-, hormone- and additive-free produce will be key, and diners can expect offbeat cuts and a focus on animals that have served one or two purposes already in their life, including mutton and hogget. Alanna’s ARC Wine Bar menu will feature an array of ‘unusual-yet-approachable’ snacks – imagine kangaroo with candied melon, goose rillettes with sour cherry and rye, and plenty of seafood. Ian – who was recently awarded the Judy Hirst Award for Australia’s Best Sommelier – has curated an extensive list of more than 500 wines centred heavily around natural, biodynamic drops made using artisanal and sustainable practices. Look out for more details next week.

PappaRich and PAFU
Malaysian and Japanese delights are coming together this summer at Coorparoo Square. Much-loved Malaysian eatery PappaRich is bringing its flavour-packed hawker-style eats to the precinct this month with a unique addition – it will be sharing its space with Japanese puff-pastry sensation PAFU. The treat outlet comes from the team behind Hokkaido Baked Cheese Tarts and now boasts five stores across Victoria and New South Wales since its launch in December 2017. The Coorparoo Square location will be PAFU’s first Queensland store, serving its traditional Japanese take on French apple turnovers (ou chausson aux) – think buttery layers of flaky pastry filled with locally grown stewed Fuji apples and rich custard. Patrons will be able to grab a PAFU treat to go, or when they dine in at PappaRich Coorparoo Square. As for PappaRich, expect its menu of classic Malaysian favourites including biryani with red chicken and sambal eggplant, roti canai with curry chicken, and curry laksa. PappaRich and PAFU Coorparoo Square are opening in the coming weeks – we’ll have more details soon!

Noosa Food & Wine Festival
Noosa’s annual celebration of food and wine has announced it will be returning for 2019, with a mouth-watering five-day program from May 16–20. Next year’s Noosa Food & Wine Festival line-up looks to be one of its biggest yet – expect dinners with celebrity chefs, hinterland trail experiences, country dining under the stars and beachfront sundowner barbecues. Visiting chefs for 2019 include the aforementioned Alanna Sapwell, Colin Fassnidge, Christine Manfield, Jo Barrett, Jock Zonfrillo, Paul Carmichael, Neil Perry and many more. Noosa Food & Wine Festival’s popular Festival Village will be back from Saturday May 18 to Sunday May 19, where you’ll find signature dishes from some of Noosa’s best restaurants, world-class chefs doing live demonstrations on stage, interactive masterclasses and purveyor markets. Harry’s Liquor and Delicatessen
In more Howard Smith Wharves news – Harry’s Liquor and Delicatessen is set to partially open this weekend from Saturday December 15. The providore will pay homage to Howard Smith Wharves’ founder Adam Flaskas’ Greek grandfather Harry, who ran New Farm’s Continental Deli when Adam was growing up. The details on Harry’s are being held tightly under wraps, however we can reveal that as of this Saturday you’ll be able to grab an array of cured meats and liquor to take away, including on-site-brewed Felons beer and Sonny cider, as well as a selection of wine. Harry’s will officially open in the new year with a wider selection of delicacies, including a gourmet retail range. You can find Harry’s Liquor and Delicatessen at the New Farm end of the Howard Smith Wharves precinct past Howard’s Hall, accessible via the east lift. We’ll have full details for you next year.
