Pavement Whispers: Volume 153 December 19

From whispers of hearty Southern eats to plant-based versions of cafe classics, The Weekend Edition is always on the search for the latest news in Brisbane, dedicated to ensuring its readers are in the know. When we put our ears to the pavement this week, this is what we found out …

Dicki’s
If the new-year new you has an interest in eating a plant-based diet, you’re going to be pretty excited to hear there’s a new vegan cafe coming to town. Taking over the former site of Pablo in New Farm, Dicki’s is set to open in mid-to-late January serving up vegan eats for breakfast and lunch seven days a week. The cafe comes from Zulueta siblings Lexi, Justine, Choy and Diana, and pays homage to the family’s first vegan, their father Dicki. The all-day menu will feature plant-based versions of cafe classics and favourites, promising nourishing dishes that will appeal to both vegans and meat eaters alike. We’ll have more details early next year.

Bordertown
Noosaville’s Bordertown is making its way south, bringing its Southern American-style burgers and tacos to Post Office Square in late January. Bordertown’s owners are certainly no strangers to the Brisbane dining scene – the venue is a combined effort from The Bowery and The Buffalo Club co-founder Cam Birt, his wife and co-founder of The Zoo CC Smith, and friend and former co-owner of The Buffalo Club Dan Bechly. The Brisbane eatery will have a similar look and menu to Noosaville sans booze, but focus more on takeaway eats. Expect to find Bordertown’s famous burgers including the Harley James Special with double beef, double cheese, bacon, barbecue sauce, mustard and red onion, and tacos filled with the likes of panko-crumbed fish, confit chicken and fried cauliflower.

Tai Tai
With venues including The Charming SquirePig ‘N’ Whistle, Jimmy’s on the Mall, Phuc Deli-Viet and more to its name, you would think that the Mantle Group had enough on its plate. Your thoughts would be incorrect. The group is working on its latest venture, Tai Tai, a Cantonese-style eatery due to open in South Bank’s ABC Building in March. The 150-seat space is in the creative hands of architect Rickard Kirk, who also designed the ABC Building. Look out for more details in the new year.
