Pavement Whispers: Volume 210 February 19

From whispers of exciting food arcades to free chicken wings, The Weekend Edition is always on the search for the latest news in Brisbane, dedicated to ensuring its readers are in the know. When we put our ears to the pavement this week, this is what we found out …

FudoDori
Brisbane City’s Elizabeth Arcade is in the process of a complete transformation, soon to be revealed as FudoDori. Translating from Japanese to ‘food street’, FudoDori will be just that – the arcade will be lined from Elizabeth to Charlotte Street with a veritable smorgasbord of food outlets. The team behind the dining destination want FudoDori to be a social experience just as much as it is about the food, believing that food is only as good as the people around you. The concept allows diners to engage in a roaming dining experience, working their way through the arcade to sample different dishes along the way. The style of food will progress through FudoDori – the Elizabeth Street side will cater more to daytime eating with cafes and grab-and-go bites, with the offerings becoming increasingly suited to evening until reaching Charlotte Street, which will be dedicated to late-night ramen bars and sake-fuelled izakayas. Kyoto-style modern Japanese cafe Koto Sanpo (which recently opened on the Gold Coast) will lead the FudoDori offering, opening its expansive flagship store on Elizabeth Street in late March/early April. The remaining 10–12 tenancies will gradually open following Koto Sanpo, offering the likes of godzilla (jumbo) gyoza, Japanese hot dogs, ramen and other Japanese and non-Japanese delights. We’ll keep you posted with more updates as they are revealed.

The Wolfe
Have you been wondering when you might next get a taste of Josue Lopez’s culinary creations? The answer is tonight, if you so desire. The ex-GOMA Restaurant chef has taken over Paul McGivern’s hatted The Wolfe restaurant in East Brisbane, marking Josue’s first foray into chef/owner territory, together with his wife Krystal. Josue says he learnt a lot about himself during his time at GOMA, establishing his philosophy of storytelling through food, which will carry through to his menu at The Wolfe. Regulars should be assured that the a la carte offering will not be too dissimilar to what Paul established at The Wolfe, but will showcase Josue’s distinct creative style. Some of the chef’s signature dishes, such as his painted wattleseed custard dessert, will be reinterpreted on the menu, plus a six-course degustation will allow Josue to take diners on a truly special culinary journey. Opening hours and contact details at The Wolfe remain the same – hit our Stumble Guide if you need a refresher.

Wing Fix
Popular food truck Wing Fix has announced its first permanent location, set to open in Morningside on March 1. The eatery will be serving up the American-style chicken wings its regular food-truck visitors know and love, with flavours including classic buffalo wing, garlic parmesan, honey-soy Korean fried chicken, cola barbecue and crispy fried. The Morningside bricks-and-mortar location will also serve up a selection of juicy Angus burgers, alongside fries and sides. To celebrate the opening, Wing Fix will be giving away free wings to the first 200 customers on March 1 – head to our Event Guide for details.

e’cco bistro
Renowned chef and restaurateur Philip Johnson is back in the e’cco bistro kitchen – just in time to celebrate its first birthday at Haven Newstead. While Philip has continued to oversee the kitchen at e’cco over the years, he has officially taken back over the reins. His return also marks a menu overhaul at the restaurant, with Philip creating a selection of brand-new dishes as well as reviving some signature e’cco classics from the past. Philip’s much-loved Moreton Bay bug risotto is making a triumphant return, as well as the spatchcock with Paris mash and hazelnut ice-cream sandwich. These favourites will sit alongside an array of new dishes, including Angus short rib with savoy cabbage, bacon and fried polenta. To celebrate e’cco bistro’s first birthday at Haven and Philip’s return to the kitchen, the restaurant will be serving Philip’s famous field mushrooms on olive toast with rocket, parmesan and truffle oil as a special from now until March 11.

IKU
Earlier this year we revealed that Brisbane Quarter would be welcoming fast-and-fresh Japanese noodle bar IKU from the family behind Gasworks’ Reef Seafood & Sushi at the end of this month. The eatery’s opening date has now been pushed back to July, however you won’t have to wait that long to get a taste – IKU has announced a second location! IKU Post Office Square will be opening in April with its ‘Subway-style’ concept, allowing diners to build their own noodle bowls from base and soup style, right down to proteins and toppings.
