Pavement Whispers: Volume 211 February 26

From whispers of ice-cream festivals to Beyond Meat burgers, The Weekend Edition is always on the search for the latest news in Brisbane, dedicated to ensuring its readers are in the know. When we put our ears to the pavement this week, this is what we found out …

Brisbane Ice Cream Festival
It’s back, baby! Brisbane Ice Cream Festival is returning to West Village for its third consecutive year, bigger and better (and cooler) than ever. This year’s instalment will stretch over two days, with three sessions each on Saturday March 23 and Sunday March 24. Adding an extra day isn’t even enough to fit in all of the creamy celebrations – the 2019 Brisbane Ice Cream Festival will also feature two evening events. On Friday March 22, Up Late will see The Deck WV become an adults-only ice-cream wonderland, with boozy creations, cocktails (hello, sorbet mojitos) and a DJ spinning the sweetest tunes. On Saturday March 23, Chef’s Playground will take over The Bromley Room #2 in the iconic Peters Ice Cream factory building, bringing together four of Brisbane’s best chefs to experiment with both savoury and sweet ice-cream delights. Philip Johnson, Ben Williamson, Paul McGivern and Dominique Rizzo will work together to create eight innovative dishes, paired with wine. As with previous years, Brisbane Ice Cream Festival‘s daytime events are free to attend but you do have to secure tickets and your time slot – registration opens this Friday March 1 from 9:00 am, as well as ticket sales for the evening events. We’ll have the full scoop for you in this Thursday’s issue of The Weekend Edition!

Corella
Last week we shared the news that renowned chef Josue Lopez had taken over the reins of Paul McGivern’s hatted East Brisbane restaurant, The Wolfe. So you might have been wondering – what’s next for Paul? The restaurateur and chef is continuing operations at his Fish Lane bar and eatery La Lune, but also has a new project in the works. While detailed information is still under wraps, we can reveal that Paul will be opening a new venue called Corella at Aria Property’s new The Drapery development in Woolloongabba. Paul will be overseeing the 50-seater venue from front of house and behind the scenes, with chef Callum Grey running the kitchen. Much like Paul’s other venues, Corella will focus on simple, modern and produce-driven dishes. The opening date is yet to be announced, we’ll keep you posted.

Beyond Meat at Ribs & Burgers
Have you been hankering to try the Bill Gates and Leonardo DiCaprio-backed Beyond Meat? The meat alternative has revolutionised plant-based burgers with its convincing ‘meat-like’ flavour and texture – and now you can try it for yourself at Ribs & Burgers. As of March 11, The Beyond Old School Cheese and Beyond Original burgers will be added to the Ribs & Burgers Australia menu, as plant-based versions of the burger joint’s most popular buns. In Brisbane, the burgers will be available at both the Woolloongabba and James Street Ribs & Burgers outlets – we’re excited to hear your verdict.

Harajuku Gyoza’s Super Raindrop Cake
If you cast your mind back to 2016, you may remember a little dessert phenomenon that took over our Instagram feeds – Harajuku Gyoza’s Raindrop Cake. The clear, wobbly and mysterious treat captured our collective fascination and took social media by storm, with crowds around the country clamouring for a taste if not out of pure curiosity. Well, folks, there’s no filter needed for the Japanese eatery’s latest creation – the Super Raindrop Cake! Building upon the original recipe that utilises natural spring water sweetened with caster sugar and set with fruit, the Super Raindrop Cake comes in three new flavours to try. Diners can sample the stunning sakura and kinako, raspberry and red berry sugar, and mango and matcha variations at Harajuku Gyoza Albert Lane in Brisbane City for a limited time.
