Brisbane Ice Cream Festival
That’s right friends – Brisbane Ice Cream Festival is back for round two. After a massive sell-out event last year, the festival is once again taking over West End’s West Village on Saturday March 10, paying homage to the site’s former life as Peter’s Ice Cream Factory. This year’s festival is promising to be bigger and better than the inaugural event, filled with gelato, ice-cream sandwiches, old-fashioned ice-cream vans (with that signature ‘Greensleeves’ jingle) and never-before-seen treats created especially for the event, including Chop Chop Chang’s eye-catching dessert bao, cannoli filled with pistachio gelato from La Macelleria, and a vibrant Stranger Things-themed creation from Ruby the Little Red Ice Cream Van. Now remember, while Brisbane Ice Cream Festival is free, you must register to secure your entry in one of the three timed sessions. The New Black
The site formerly housing Lost Boys on the corner of Bakery Lane is currently undergoing a significant makeover. Due to open in early March, The New Black is taking over the space, restoring the building to reflect its heritage beauty. The cafe will be a flagship in Brisbane for coffee roasters The Black Lab Coffee Co., head up by co-owner Sam Holman, offering its blends and single origins brewed as syphon, French press, cold drop, V60 and more. Chef Andrew Cameron (formerly Pawpaw and Little Loco) will man the pans, plating up breakfast, lunch and evening tapas (alongside a concise bar menu) seven days a week.
Cakes and Shit
So what of The Tree House space behind Lost Boys? The answer is Cakes and Shit. Baker Samantha Fitzpatrick, wife of The New Black’s Sam Holman, is taking the second Bakery Lane space to open a cheeky late-night bakery. Cakes and Shit will whip up wholesome-style baked goods your granny would make, but with the kind of sass that would have her washing your mouth out with soap. Cupcakes will bear naughty and raunchy one-liners, and you can build your own cupcake with the message of your desire. If you care not for profanities, you can still grab delicious non-offensive treats until late into the evening.
Are you ready to get your hands dirty? Louisiana Redclaw is bringing traditional Southern-style crawfish boils to Fortitude Valley’s M&A dining precinct, due to open in the coming weeks. Instead of crawfish as a specialty, the casual eatery will serve up native Australian redclaw crayfish (yabbies) boiled in Cajun-style spices. As well as redclaw, you can choose from the likes of Alaskan king crab, prawns, clams and more, tossed in your flavour of choice (think original Cajun or garlic butter) with your selected level of heat. Fried seafood options will also be on the menu, as well as a range of American-style sides. Diners will be encouraged to use their hands and don’t worry – bibs and gloves will be available.

Together with our friends at King Street, The Weekend Edition is presenting the Summer Series Pop-Up Picnic on Saturday February 24, treating guests to a dreamy Mediterranean-style dining experience. This intimate affair will be limited to only 30 guests, who will be greeted with a welcome drink and escorted to our whimsical candlelit picnic setting to indulge in an evening of flowing wine, feasting and fun. The Pine Kitchen will be putting on a delectable spread of Mediterranean delights, including the likes of chicken and kofta skewers, calamari, felafels, tabouleh, hummus, Lebanese bread and more.
