Pavement Whispers: Volume 206 January 22

From whispers of new specialty coffee spots to brewery open days, The Weekend Edition is always on the search for the latest news in Brisbane, dedicated to ensuring its readers are in the know. When we put our ears to the pavement this week, this is what we found out …

Masters St Coffee
Newstead’s Masters Street is soon to welcome a new caffeine purveyor – aptly named Masters St Coffee. The cafe is the second solo venture from barista-turned-owner Andrea Cook, the gal behind Brisbane City’s Fifty Fifty Coffee Co. Much like its sibling venue, Masters St Coffee will focus on specialty coffee, sourcing its beans from Sydney roaster Single O. Masters St will be a progression from Fifty Fifty’s hole-in-the-wall space, however, with more seating and room to sit down to enjoy simple eats including bagels, avocado on toast, crumpets, pastries and Alphabet doughnuts and treats on weekends. Ollie Burscough from Woodsters is currently working on the minimalist fit-out, with Masters St Coffee due to open mid-March.

Felons Brewing Co Open Day
Late last year, Brisbane dwellers welcomed Felons Brewing Co (and Howard Smith Wharves) with open arms – so open, in fact, that they drank an entire month’s supply of Felons’ limited-edition ale in just three days over the festive season. To thank the community for its overwhelming support, Felons is holding an official brewery open day(s) this weekend, across Saturday January 26 and Sunday January 27 from 11:00 am until late each day. The event will feature two full days of entertainment for the whole family (and pooches too), with hourly brewery tours and beer tasting, live entertainment from 12:00 pm each day, face painting, puppy pampering and more. The open weekend will also see the introduction of Felons’ truck and Ape pop-up bars, which will be spread across Howard Smith Wharves’ lawns serving Sonny Cider, spritzes and beer.

BITE Markets
The much-anticipated BITE Markets at North Harbour has announced its opening weekend for Friday March 1 and Saturday March 2, as well as a sneak peek at its 40-odd stallholders. The markets, located on Nolan Drive in Morayfield, will celebrate the produce of the Moreton Bay region, showcasing a selection of local stalls offering an array of cuisines from across the globe. BITE Markets’ opening line-up includes the likes of Zoe’s Brownies, MITTE Berlin Street Food, Don Quijote Paella and Tapas, Mr BunzTibetan Momo Cafe, Mocktail Madness and more. Entry to BITE Markets will be $3 for adults and free for children under 12, with no single item inside costing more than $15. For full details, hit up our Event Guide

Motorwagen
Brisbane City’s Motorwagen has recently appointed new head chef Dario Manca to lead its kitchen. Dario has earned numerous accolades over his career and worked in a number of awarded and Michelin-starred restaurants across the globe, most recently at two-hatted Pilu at Freshwater in Sydney as senior sous chef. Since his appointment, Dario has refreshed the Motorwagen menu with his own culinary creativity, whilst maintaining the cafe and restaurant’s European style. Diners can indulge in dishes of spanner-crab salad with soft cheesy polenta, dry-aged Angus beef tartare, and slow-cooked lamb breast with potato mash and pickled yellow zucchini. Motorwagen (which sits alongside Mercedes-Benz Brisbane) has also recently launched a $20 workers lunch for those looking for more than just a boring sandwich.
