Pavement Whispers: Volume 204 January 8

From whispers of moody laneway bars to neighbourhood fish and chipperies, The Weekend Edition is always on the search for the latest news in Brisbane, dedicated to ensuring its readers are in the know. When we put our ears to the pavement this week, this is what we found out …

Death & Taxes
As the old saying goes, nothing is certain except death and taxes. We believe it extends beyond that – for if you step inside one of Martin Lange’s bars, you can be certain you’re in for a good time. The brains behind CobblerSavile Row and Finney Isles is working on a new project aptly named Death & Taxes, due to open on March 1. Martin and his team have taken over a new space on Burnett Lane, which will take inspiration from the moody cocktail bars of London and Paris. Previously a storage space, elements of Death & Taxes will remain semi-industrial, offset by dark wood panelling, leather stools and booths, and rustic features illuminated by low lighting. In true Martin Lange style, the bar will be very spirit focused, with the four-metre-tall back bar highlighting whisky as well as gin, rum, tequila and mescal. The team has been experimenting to create a 30-strong list of unique flavour-driven cocktails, alongside a contemporary and fun wine selection. While Death & Taxes won’t serve food, bites will be available from nearby venues, including soon-to-open neighbouring Spanish delicatessen-style tapas bar Alba, which will be working closely to match its food offering with Death & Taxes’ wines and whiskies. We’ll have more details on Death & Taxes and Alba for you very soon!

Perch’d
When Jen Byrnes and Patrick Laws opened Camp Hill’s Martha Street Kitchen a year and a half ago, they could have only dreamed of the unwavering local loyalty the pizzeria receives. Inspired by their neighbourhood love, Jen and Patrick are embarking on their second venture in the area, casual fish and chippery Perch’d. The duo fell in love with a breezy Queenslander space on the corner of York Street and Cavendish Road in Coorparoo, and they are currently transforming the character-filled space with plans to open by the end of the month. Perch’d will be a predominantly takeaway venue open for lunch and dinner, with a simple-but-thoughtful staple menu filled with nostalgic fish-and-chip classics. Fish will be sourced seasonally and, while the menu is simple, it won’t compromise on taste or quality. Drawing on his skills and experience, chef Patrick will make almost everything from scratch, including a special batter, hand-cut chips and house-made sauces. His creativity will be unleashed through inventive weekly specials, which will be dictated by availability from local fishermen and markets. A small dine-in section will spread out to the eatery’s breezy verandah (which will be dog friendly) and Perch’d will serve a concise selection of natural wines and local beers from Green Beacon on tap. Look out for more details in the coming weeks!

City Winery Brisbane
In July last year we made a pretty exciting announcement – that Brisbane would be getting its first micro-winery. While the details of the location were held tightly under wraps, we got our first taste of Gerler wines through its Newstead cellar door and cafe Carl’s, and we can now reveal that City Winery Brisbane is set to open early this year on Wandoo Street in Fortitude Valley. The inner-city winery will take over the space previously occupied by Campos behind James Street Markets, and feature a winery, modern-Australian restaurant The Barrelroom, private dining room and cellar. As far as winemaking goes, City Winery will continue to produce Gerler wines, with winemaker David Cush and team sourcing grapes from across the country wherever they grow best. City Winery promises to be an experience destination or ‘wine playground’, where visitors will have a hands-on wine education experience, viewing the process, stomping on grapes, assisting with bottling and more. In The Barrelroom, chef Travis Crane will create a uniquely Australian menu that matches each of the wines in Gerler’s selection, centred around an open fire. We’ll keep you posted.

Harvest on Queen
Move over food courts – we’re all about food halls. If you’re wondering what the difference is, the best example we can provide is Harvest on Queen. This brand-new dining concept comes from RMS Group, the savvy operators behind Hellcat Maggie and rejuvenated Fortitude Valley mainstay Alfred & Constance. Hailed as a multi-faceted food experience, Harvest On Queen is a spacious dining hall situated on level two of 480 Queen housing numerous choices for breakfast and lunch, made by a team of culinary specialists from within an immense on-site kitchen. The cavalcade of options includes Asian-style wok dishes, grilled morsels, sandwiches, sushi, Vietnamese bites, carvery delights, baked goods and much more. In addition to the food hall, Harvest on Queen will also be home to a plush business lounge – complete with a 20-seater boardroom overlooking Brisbane River, perfect for meetings and client presentations. Finally, a European-inspired street-side bar called Cultivate will operate from morning until evening, serving espresso and pastries at dawn before morphing into a chic wine and charcuterie bar at night. You don’t have long to wait until you can experience this smorgasbord for yourself – Harvest on Queen is set to softly open in the next two weeks, while Cultivate is expected to launch in early February.
