Pavement Whispers: Volume 180 July 10

From whispers of an inner-city winery to award-winning chefs, The Weekend Edition is always on the search for the latest news in Brisbane, dedicated to ensuring its readers are in the know. When we put our ears to the pavement this week, this is what we found out …

City Winery
Brisbane is home to a stellar selection of micro-breweries and soon we will welcome its first micro-winery. City Winery is the brainchild of duo Dave Cush and Adam Penberthy, who have drawn on the craft-brewery concept to bring a winery experience to the inner city. Qualified viticulturist and Queensland local Dave has spend the last 15 years in Tasmania honing his craft in wine production at Spring Vale, a vineyard owned by his wife’s family since 1875. This knowledge has now been brought home, where Dave and his wife Kris have been making Gerler wine in preparation for City Winery’s opening in 2019. Gerler wine sources its grapes from small growers around Australia, choosing varieties from the regions in which they grow best. Initially, the wine is being sold online, with City Winery set to launch a pop-up in the coming months. Once complete, the permanent City Winery site will feature a micro-winery, Gerler cellar door, restaurant, wine bar and function space.

Restaurant Dan Arnold
After seven years in France, Brisbane-born Dan Arnold has come home to open his first restaurant. Restaurant Dan Arnold has taken over the space beneath the Alex Perry Hotel & Apartments in Fortitude Valley, and is due to open its doors today, Tuesday July 10. Dan perfected his craft in France, working at three Michelin-star restaurant l’Espérance and two Michelin-star Serge Vieira, leading him to earn bronze at the Bocuse d’Or Asia-Pacific Competition 2016 and placing eighth in the world with his team at the Bocuse d’Or World Final in 2017. Drawing on his experience and skills, Dan has created an evolving menu of Australian flavours, served as three- or five-course degustations. Expect to find the likes of yam carpaccio with confit and crisp Jerusalem artichoke, candied lemon and hazelnut sauce, and charcoal duck breast, braised leg with celeriac remoulade and Tasmanian pepper. Look out on The Weekend Edition this Thursday for a detailed look at Restaurant Dan Arnold.

Indulgence – A Night of Champagne and Caviar
Self-confessed appreciator of life’s finest things, The Gresham, is taking a night to step away from its beloved whisky to focus on something a little more effervescent. On Wednesday August 1, the bar will host Indulgence – A Night of Champagne and Caviar to treat guests to an evening of decadence. From 7:00 pm, Perrier-Jouët Champagne and Cognac Ambassador Romaric Behaghel will guide guests through Perrier-Jouët’s range and the history of champagne, while Black Pearl Epicure representative Andy Schofield pairs them with traditionally served caviars.
