Pavement Whispers: Volume 131 July 18

From whispers of an espresso martini festival to a secret bar within a bar, The Weekend Edition is always on the search for the latest news in Brisbane, dedicated to ensuring its readers are in the know. When we put our ears to the pavement this week, this is what we found out …

The Drawing Room at The Gresham
Fancy the idea of barception? Then get excited for the opening of The Drawing Room, The Gresham’s new bar within a bar. The Drawing Room was inspired by bar manager Ryan Lane’s recent visit to The Dead Rabbit in New York, which houses smaller cocktail bar The Parlor within its walls – a vibe that he wanted to emulate at The Gresham. He set to work transforming The Gresham’s underused private lounge, resulting in a warm intimate space with a distinct heritage feel, oozing old-world charm. A one-man bar has been added to the space, which will have a different, more concise menu than The Gresham with ten carefully crafted cocktails, delivered to you via table service. Once The Drawing Room opens in early August, patrons will have to ring a bell at the door inside The Gresham for entry. As the bar only seats 24 guests, there will be a waitlist to get in, and you’ll be sent a text when your table is ready. We’ll have full details for you in the coming weeks.

Espresso Martini Festival
You read that correctly – a festival dedicated to the beloved caffeinated cocktail is coming your way! Brisbane’s first Espresso Martini Festival has been announced for Tuesday August 15 (Ekka-holiday eve), set to take over the car park outside Hello Please in Fish Lane. The team from Brooklyn Standard will be concocting a selection of caffeine-fuelled cocktails that will experiment beyond the standard espresso martini, and Hello Please will be serving up a selection of its signature Vietnamese street eats – think crispy chicken ribs, pork belly bao, grilled pork meatballs and more. For ticketing information and more details, head to our Event Guide.

Phoebe Paradise
If you aren’t already familiar with Phoebe Paradise, expect to start hearing the name more and more frequently from now on. The home-grown fashion label has been turning heads with collections of colourful, in-your-face fashion, and now the brand is taking the next step with a bricks-and-mortar store of its own at 715 Ann Street – just a hop, skip and a jump from Winn Lane. Fans of Phoebe Paradise’s vibrant garments, accessories and prints will be able to obtain all of the latest pieces from the store, but that’s only half of Phoebe’s vision for the space. The boutique will also be home to pop-ups from up-and-coming designers and artists, with local makers invited to showcase new product lines in a physical space situated in one of the busiest precincts in Brisbane. The Phoebe Paradise shop will open in August – be sure to keep your eyes on The Weekend Edition for updates.

Bite Sip Stroll
The moveable feast that is Bite Sip Stroll is back again, this time treating its guests to the best that Fortitude Valley has to offer. The afternoon of gourmet exploration has been announced for Saturday September 9, when guests will bite, sip, and stroll between Gerard’s BistroNickel Kitchen & BarThe APO and Gerard’s Bar. Spanning over three and a half hours, Bite Sip Stroll begins with a glass of sparkling on arrival, followed by a specially created dish and matched wine at each of the venues. Head to our Event Guide for ticketing and event details.
