Pavement Whispers: Volume 229 July 2

From news of a brand-new Thai concept for Brisbane Quarter to a Woolloongabba locale's rebirth as a primo pizza joint, The Weekend Edition is always on the search for the latest news in Brisbane, dedicated to ensuring its readers are in the know. When we put our ears to the pavement this week, this is what we found out …

Phat Boy
Between the produce-driven fare at Three Blue Ducks at W Brisbane, Persone’s refined Italian classics and the ultra-modern Indian cuisine at Heritij, diners that venture to Brisbane Quarter on George Street are spoiled for choice. Proving that variety is the spice of life, the popular podium-level precinct will soon be welcoming a new culinary concept to its midst when Phat Boy opens in August. Phat Boy comes from the team behind Phat Elephant and Chai Thai, and like its older siblings is focusing on Thai food, but with a few tasty tweaks sprinkled across the menu. Details are being kept close to the chest, but we’ve been told that Phat Boy’s menu will celebrate everything great about Thai cuisine, with dishes put together using the best produce Brisbane has to offer. The restaurant’s Facebook page has been keeping us drooling with drip-fed glimpses of the fare, including crispy skin chicken curry, soft-shell crab curry, shiitake-mushroom stir-fry and more, and we hear that the experimentation will also extend to the cocktail list. We’ll have a closer look at Phat Boy when it opens next month.

Superfly Pizza
A couple of months back, we reported that Woolloongabba laneway izakaya Superfly Funk Eye would close its doors in anticipation of a concept overhaul. Good news for locals of the ‘Gabba – we can now reveal details of the eatery’s new direction. Superfly Funk Eye will be reborn as Superfly Pizza this Thursday. As the name entails, Superfly will be pivoting from Japanese finger food to a concise array of classic pizzas and sides, with an eye towards becoming an appealing community eatery that locals can frequent on the regular. Superfly’s menu will offer a total of six pizzas to choose from (skewing slightly to favour red-base options), while also cooking up rotating specials topped with more adventurous ingredient pairings. Dough will be made on site, and the pizzas will be complemented by sides such as meatballs and cheese and charcuterie. Superfly will be maintaining its discerning approach to drink, stocking a killer selection of minimal-intervention wines, with some Mediterranean varietals and Italian-inspired cocktails added to the overall mix. Stay tuned for a closer look soon!

Monocle Coffee
Venzin Group – the hospitality collective behind Pawpaw, Mons Ban Sabai and Sundays Cafe – is adding to its portfolio with Monocle Coffee, a specialty coffee house located in Morningside. Set to open in mid-July, Monocle Coffee will be serving up high-end coffee roasted by the Monocle team, alongside a menu of ready-made eats designed for the on-the-go takeaway crowd. We’re talking fresh salads and pastries, with plenty of vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free choices to snack on. Keep your eyes peeled for more information closer to opening.

The Locals Panel Series
In May, some of Brisbane’s finest culinary minds gathered to dispense their foodie wisdom. In June, a panel of awe-inspiring artisans delved into the inner-workings of the design world. This month, some of our city’s sharpest sartorial figures will assemble to talk about the current state of style – from giving fast fashion the flick to making a sustainable statement. On Wednesday July 24, The Locals Panel Series gets suited and booted for a forum on fashion, featuring conversation between beloved designers, stylists and members of the fashion media. Our esteemed panel this month features Brisbane-based designer Alice Nightingale, sustainable stylist Karen Uhlmann, founder of online sustainable-fashion publication Britt’s List Brittanie Dreghorn, and panel moderator and Brisbane Fashion Month director Laura Churchill. Tickets are on sale now – snag yours here before they disappear.
