Pavement Whispers: Volume 132 July 25

From whispers of a heritage bank bar to Wednesday night wine clubs, The Weekend Edition is always on the search for the latest news in Brisbane, dedicated to ensuring its readers are in the know. When we put our ears to the pavement this week, this is what we found out …

Heritage Bank Bar
The grand heritage-listed Bank of New South Wales Building on the corner of George Street and Queen Street Mall is set to have a new lease on life, reimagined as an impressive 1930s-style bar. A development application has been submitted to Brisbane City Council, with the proposal taking inspiration from the likes of London’s The Old Bank of England bar and The NoMad Hotel in New York. Preliminary plans will maximise on the building’s already resplendent heritage space and finishes, featuring a large central bar, lobby and several seating areas, as well as proposed outdoor seating in Queen Street Mall. Styling will have a distinct 1930s feel, with the application presenting dark heritage colours, timber panels and Chesterfield lounges offset by lighter finishes and colours in the double-height space. The bar is yet to be approved by Council – we’ll keep you posted.

Cribb Street Social
The guys from Mr Edward’s Alehouse have a new project in the works, bringing cocktails, charcuterie and good times to Milton with Cribb Street Social. Due to open in September on the corner of Cribb and Little Cribb Streets, the bar and eatery will feature a large grassy outdoor area, perfect for rolling out a picnic rug and kicking back with shared cocktails in the sun. Cribb Street Social will have a European-inspired menu, serving up breakfast and lunch through the day, and switching to small and large share plates of an evening. Much like Mr Edward’s, cheese and charcuterie will be a huge focus, with an impressive cabinet displaying the cured meat offering sitting behind the bar. Ten beers and four cocktails will be on tap, alongside a sizeable gin selection. We’ll have more details for you soon.

Wine Club Wednesdays
We know that Barbara is the place to go for an ice-cold bev and a turn about the dance floor, but on Wednesday nights the team at Babs wants you to indulge with them in some sweet berry wine. Wine Club Wednesdays is launching on August 2 at the Fortitude Valley bar, which will see a local wine merchant pouring drops every Wednesday evening alongside delicious cheese from a local provider. The wines on offer will be different from Barbara’s normal wine list, with the month of August featuring bottles from wine distributors Cork & Co, such as new releases from Adelaide Hills’ winery Unico Zelo. It wouldn’t be Barbara without some killer tunes – you be sipping and swaying to the Italo disco sounds from DJ Greaves.

Allium x The Wolfe collaborative degustation dinner
Cookies and cream, wine and cheese, bacon and eggs – what do these pairings have in common? They are all amazing, of course. We’re all for culinary combos, so when we got word that Allium and The Wolfe are teaming up for a collaborative degustation dinner on Sunday August 20 we got giddy with excitement. The Wolfe’s hatted chef Martyn Ridings and his kitchen squad will team up with their Allium counterparts at Allium’s New Farm venue, where the assembled talent will create eight exceptional courses with matched wines. Both restaurants are counted among Brisbane’s best, so any fine-dining foodies would be wise to book for one of the two seatings as soon as possible.
