Pavement Whispers: Volume 183 July 31

From whispers of Ben's Burgers' new location to instant specialty coffee, The Weekend Edition is always on the search for the latest news in Brisbane, dedicated to ensuring its readers are in the know. When we put our ears to the pavement this week, this is what we found out …

Ben’s Burgers
Exciting news, burger lovers – Ben’s Burgers has announced it’s opening a second burger joint! We’ve been sworn to secrecy on the location and opening date, but we can tell you that you can expect all of the Ben’s classics you know and love, plus a possible cheeky addition or two, and that it’s happening soon. So soon, in fact, that we can give you all of the juicy details on Ben’s Burgers’ second location on The Weekend Edition this Thursday. Subscribe now to be among the first to find out!

Sealegs Brewing Co.
Brisbane is continuing to strengthen its craft-beer offering, with the announcement of Sealegs Brewing Co. in Kangaroo Point. The brewery is currently setting up shop in a warehouse beneath the Story Bridge, due to open in late October this year. The Sealegs team has brewed more than 130 batches over the last two-and-a-half years, perfecting its craft, and will offer a variety of beers ranging from light quaffable summer-style lagers to hop-heavy IPAs. Once open, Sealegs will pour 12 beers on tap, with six staples and six rotating, alongside a menu of complementary eats such as pizzas, burgers and wings. Growlers and squealers will be available to take brews home, and once up and running Sealegs will be distributing to a selection of craft breweries around town.

Instant Specialty
When it comes to great coffee, Marcus Allison has certainly earned his stripes. The aficionado is behind the likes of Bunker Coffee, John Mills Himself and Bessa Coffee, and we know you love what he does – Bunker has won Best Place for Coffee in The Weekend Edition’s EAT/drink Awards for the past two years. For his latest venture, Marcus is focusing on something a little different – instant coffee. Now before you pass your judgement, this ain’t no Moccona situation. We’re talking instant specialty coffee here and for the last year Marcus has been working on perfecting his new product, aptly named Instant Specialty. He’s working with roasted specialty coffee supplied by some of the world’s best roasters, carefully and intentionally extracting it, then freeze drying it (in flakes, not granules) to create the highest quality instant specialty coffee possible. In short – it’s incredible, bold-tasting, aromatic specialty coffee as you like it, but with the functionality and convenience of being instant. We’ve had a little sample and let’s just say, it certainly hits the spot. Marcus is currently working on the first public production run, with sachets and jars available from early September. We’ll have full details on the process and flavour profiles for you soon!

Bellissimo Coffee
More news for Coorparoo! Bellissimo Coffee is currently working on its third and largest location, moving its headquarters and roasting operations to a new site on Cavendish Road. In addition to roasting, Bellissimo Coorparoo will feature an on-site cafe with dine-in and grab-and-go options, as well as a barista training school, and a tasting and education space. In fact, co-owner Mark Bignell is currently in Costa Rica sourcing exotic beans to showcase through tasting and cupping evenings, many of which will have never before been seen in Australia. A highlight of the new space will be a refurbished Probat G90 roaster, which has been commissioned as a 150-year anniversary showcase piece for the renowned German company, with roasting commencing on it early next year. You can expect Bellissimo Coorparoo to open in late September, which will be followed by the consecutive renovation of both the Bulimba and Fortitude Valley cafes.
