Pavement Whispers: Volume 176 June 12

From whispers of inner-city coffee roasters to renowned chefs heading north, The Weekend Edition is always on the search for the latest news in Brisbane, dedicated to ensuring its readers are in the know. When we put our ears to the pavement this week, this is what we found out …

Restaurant Labart
Exciting news for our southern friends – renowned chef Alex Munoz Labart has announced he will be opening his first restaurant in Burleigh Heads. Restaurant Labart is due to open in July, embracing an ethos of sustainability, seasonality and simplicity. Alex will draw on his experience in some of Sydney’s top restaurants, including Marque, est., and most recently as head chef at Cirrus Dining and Monopole (both of which were awarded two chefs hats under his leadership), however Restaurant Labart promises to be a much more relaxed experience. The 60-seat restaurant will centre around an open kitchen and charcoal grill, and you can expect a menu divided into snacks, small and large plates, as well as a six-course set menu guided by the best local and seasonal produce available. Food will be complemented by a tight drink list featuring unique Australian and international wine makers, with a focus on biodynamic and natural drops, plus a selection of seasonal cocktails and Australian craft beers. We’ll have the full details on The Weekend Edition Gold Coast soon.

Campos Long Island
After ten incredible years on Wandoo Street, Campos Coffee Queensland’s flagship cafe and roastery is relocating. Its new venue, named Campos Long Island, is due to open on Newstead’s Longland Street in July, situated beneath the Lucent apartments. The new 500-sqm space has been designed by Scott Petherick from SP Studio architecture, and will be the largest retail operation for Campos in the country. Campos Long Island will have a distinct industrial aesthetic flooded with natural light, featuring an indoor dining space, private meeting rooms, function facilities and an outdoor courtyard. Campos’ much-loved coffee, all-day breakfast and lunch menus will be available in the new space, plus extended trading hours will allow for after-hours small bites and share plates paired with a list of Australian beer, wine and cocktails.

Campos Piccolo
While the Campos team is excited for its new venture, directors Eugene Phua and John Ronchi didn’t want to lose sight of where it all started. Just a short stroll from the original location, the team is opening Campos Piccolo this Sunday June 17, located on the corner of Ann and Wandoo Streets. The intimate space will serve up coffee and grab-and-go options for breakfast and lunch, including classic avo on toast, gourmet sandwiches, salads and pastries, with limited seating options if you care to dine in. Visitors will be greeted with a vibrant commissioned artwork by Matt Texture, which wraps around the cafe’s exterior. The graffiti-style artwork depicts Kenya’s national bird, the lilac-breasted roller, paying homage to Campos’ social projects and initiatives within Kenya and other coffee-producing nations. We’ll have full details for you next week.

The Bloom Room
Only a few months removed from bringing the colourful Sundays Cafe to Rocklea, Giorgina Venzin (Piggy Back, Pawpaw, Picnic) is giving the Redlands some love. Birkdale’s The Bloom Room is the next project for the Venzin Group, delivering a London and European-inspired take on cafe hospitality, a departure from the Venzin Group’s penchant for Asian fusion. Expect plenty of florals and greenery, and we hear that the kitchen will be serving all-day breakfast and lunch every day of the week, as well as coffee from Veneziano. Keep your eyes peeled for The Bloom Room’s arrival in mid-August.

Smoked Garage
Motor heads and coffee lovers alike are sure to get revved up with the latest news from Smoked Garage. The custom motorcycle crew has relocated from its original Bridge Street location to a new home on 126 Wickham Street. After piecing together the venue’s fit-out on the down low, the new premises quietly opened to the public yesterday. The new three-level space incorporates a basement workshop, a dedicated events space, a schmick showroom and a fully functional cafe and coffee window. Smoked Garage’s cafe is serving grab-and-go bites such as muffins, cakes and sandwiches to start, but will be expanding very soon. The cafe is the first outlet in Brisbane to serve beans and coffee from Newtown roaster Brewtown. We’ll have a closer look at the venue for you soon.

Kuhl-Cher Coffee
Wake up and smell the coffee, Bowen Hills – King Street is about to become home to a brand-new cafe and roastery concept. Kuhl-Cher Coffee will be coming to life thanks to owners Antony Forbutt, George Angela and Peter Kaselakis, a trio of hospitality veterans with a collective 15 years’ industry experience and more than 25 thriving franchised sites across Queensland and New South Wales to their names. The rustic space will boast a dedicated Brew Bar where patrons can experience alternative brewing techniques, and coffee beans will be roasted and sold on site, with house blends and international single origins available. A breakfast and lunch offering as well as a grab-and-go cabinet stocked with fresh sweet and savoury options will complement the brews. There is also a degustation experience planned for EKKA season, so mentally book those dates out now. Kuhl-Cher Coffee will open its doors on Monday June 18 – keep your eyes on The Weekend Edition for a closer look.
