Felons Brewing Co.
Brisbane’s booming craft-beer scene is set to score a new entrant when Felons Brewing Co. turns on the taps at its riverside location at the anticipated Howard Smith Wharves precinct this October. Referencing first set of Europeans to come across the Brisbane River in the 1800s (the titular four felons), the operation is run by a pioneering team of enthusiastic craft-beer lovers. Ash Cranston (formerly of Little Creatures, Furphy and White Rabbit Brewing) and head brewer Tom Champion (also of Little Creatures) are the brains behind the brewery, which started installing its brewing apparatus last weekend. The venue is shaping up to be a modern beer hub, offering a selection of freshly brewed beers made from locally sourced ingredients. Felons Brewing Co. will stand as an anchor tenant for the Howard Smith Wharves precinct, which will also be home to a collection of new eateries, a five-star hotel and lush parklands.
Brisbane Brew Partners
In great news for up-and-coming brewers, Brisbane Brew Partners – a forthcoming incubator brewery concept in Morningside – will aim to provide a stable home for contract brewers and independent hospitality operators. Small-scale operators are typically forced to rely on established breweries for equipment and guidance until their product is ready for mass consumption. Brisbane Brew Partners will give these outfits the chance to work on top-of-the-line brewing equipment with a high-capacity output, offering a greater level of flexibility and independence under the guidance of an on-site brewer. Brisbane Brew Partners will be housing a 20BBL brewhouse, 40BBL fermenters and 40BBL brite tanks, while also offering kegging, bottling and canning capabilities, quality control laboratories and cool rooms for storage. A development application has been lodged for the $15-million development, which is planned to be erected on Lytton Road toward then end of 2018.
La Macelleria’s Aperitivo Gelato
Typically when its your birthday, the people that love you give you presents. Popular gelateria La Macelleria is flipping the script for its upcoming fourth birthday celebrations on Sunday July 1, instead choosing to give its loyal fanbase a gift – free aperitivo-inspired gelato at its Teneriffe location on Florence Street. From 5:00–7:00 pm, you can get a taste of Aperol spritz sorbet – served in glasses and made using actual Aperol and prosecco – and parmigiano reggiano gelato cubes, both available buffet style.
5 Boroughs Balmoral
Since 2015, Todd and Marisa Clayton have been giving Brisbane locals a taste of America with their popular 5 Boroughs eateries. The New York City-inspired chain is adding another location to its portfolio, opening another American-inspired eatery on Riding Road in Balmoral on Saturday June 23. Like its sibling locations in Stones Corner and Ascot, 5 Boroughs Balmoral will be showcasing the best eats inspired by the Big Apple’s culinary scene, including fish tacos, hot wings, Reuben sandwiches and stacked burgers.
