Pavement Whispers: Volume 178 June 26

From whispers of lobster rolls to Italian laneway pop-ups, The Weekend Edition is always on the search for the latest news in Brisbane, dedicated to ensuring its readers are in the know. When we put our ears to the pavement this week, this is what we found out …

King Crab Co
Bulimba is set to receive a snappy new crab den, with King Crab Co currently taking shape on Oxford Street. The seafood-oriented joint will offer a reimagined take on iconic crab boils and crustaceans, specialising in Cajun Louisiana-style ‘crab in a bag’, sprinkled with a discernible Japanese influence. We’re already salivating over the sound of Alaskan and Australian crab covered in the likes of Louisiana Old Bay cream, miso butter and lime, and Singaporean chilli, as well as fresh crab cakes, lobster rolls, prawn po’ boys, popcorn prawns and kingfish ceviche. Beyond seafood, King Crab Co will also serve up twice-cooked wings, wagyu burgers, smoked and charred ribs, steaks and Portuguese chicken. We don’t have long to wait to savour the catch – King Crab Co will be opening in mid-to-late July.

Motorwagen
In 1885, Carl Benz (of Mercedes-Benz fame) patented what is regarded as the world’s first petrol-powered motor vehicle, which he named the Motorwagen. More recently, this name has been adopted by a soon-to-open restaurant, set to reside in the upcoming Mercedes-Benz Brisbane showroom on Adelaide Street in Brisbane City. Motorwagen is the brainchild of Sam Pask (ex-OTTO Brisbane, Urbane, Esquire), who aims to reflect the craftsmanship and innovation intrinsic to the Mercedes-Benz brand in his new venture. The kitchen will be lead by chef Dylan Cashman (ex-The Blue Door on 5th, Fins, Paper Daisy), crafting an interesting yet approachable menu showcasing sustainable local produce. Motorwagen will serve ever-changing breakfast and lunch options Monday to Friday, plus dinner Thursday to Saturday, alongside Blackstar Coffee and a concise wine and cocktail list. The eatery is due to open in mid-August – we’ll have more details soon.

Salt Meats Cheese x Gelato Messina at Laneway WV
Instagram feed full of friends lapping up the European summer? Us too. Thankfully, West Village has announced its next instalment of its Laneway WV series, and the Salt Meats Cheese x Gelato Messina pop-up is bringing a little slice of Italy to the heart of Brisbane. From Tuesday July 3, the lush laneway will play host to an all-day food service from Salt Meats Cheese including fresh coffee, breakfast bruschetta, crispy porchetta and its infamous cheese-wheel pasta. Gelato Messina’s delectable desserts will be available from sundown all through July, so you can sip on signature hot chocolate and snack on mini gelato cakes. For something a little harder, visit the boutique container bar manned by Sydney’s own Archie Rose mixologists. For more times and further details, head to our Events Guide.

Gramps Cafe
Winter is truly here, making it perfect timing for Red Hill residents to welcome a warm and comforting new addition to the neighbourhood. Gramps Cafe is currently underway on Windsor Road, due for a soft opening this coming Saturday June 30. This weekend will see the cafe serving up specialty coffee and light bites such as toast and cake, with the menu growing and evolving over the coming weeks. While specialty coffee and tea will be the focus – both single origin from Single O and The Steepery Tea Co. respectively – Gramps will also serve up a menu of interesting-yet-comforting bites for breakfast and lunch. Owner Adam Murphy (ex-Wandering Cooks, Naïm) has dubbed the menu approach as ‘simplistic complexity’ and almost everything, right down to the almond milk, will be made in house, featuring predominantly vegetarian dishes with meat additions. We’ll give you a full look at Gramps Cafe next week.

Mini Markets at The Wellington
The Wellington development in East Brisbane is continuing its evolution, enticing locals with a new monthly market spearheaded by Min & Co owner Mina Ali. The Mini Markets at The Wellington brings together a curated array of pop-up retail stores, food vendors and craft artisans, with family-friendly entertainment to boot. The next event is set for Saturday July 7, and will boast a Lorna Jane pop-up, clothing from Sass and Fate, accessories by Adorne Jewellery, a suitcase rummage, free babyccinos from Min & Co, face painting, a jumping castle and bites from King of Cakes and Dello Mano.
