Pavement Whispers: Volume 264 March 17

From news of a Teneriffe gastropub's resurrection to a new Mexican concept taking over the Sourced space, The Weekend Edition is always on the search for the latest news in Brisbane, dedicated to ensuring its readers are in the know. When we put our ears to the pavement this week, this is what we found out …

Dalgety Public House 2.0
There’s a bit of a stir taking place on Florence Street in Teneriffe – not one but two new locales are set to open in the coming months! The first of this new wave is actually more of a return for a familiar name – Dalgety Public House is set to reopen in early April under new ownership. Now operated by a trio of hospitality veterans, Dalgety Public House 2.0 is currently in the midst of some renovations to the interior aesthetics and kitchen, but fans of the venue’s gastropub-style hospitality will be pleased to know that much of Dalgety’s original charm will remain for its new iteration. The food menu will boast a mouth-watering selection of elevated classics, with large portions and special deals offering plenty of value for locals. The bar’s capabilities will be increased, with the addition of new taps (bringing the total to 16) boosting Dalgety’s selection of craft and mainstream beers, as well as wine on tap. New televisions will also screen sporting fixtures, cementing Dalgety Public House 2.0 as a future go-to for the surrounding community. We’ll have more info when the venue opens next month!

La Patrona Mexican Cuisine
The past fortnight has been massive for fans of Mexican cuisine – and the good news hasn’t ended yet. A new Mexican restaurant is on its way to Teneriffe, with La Patrona Mexican Cuisine currently taking shape in the old Sourced space. Owner Rebecca Flores has lived in New Farm and Teneriffe since emigrating from Mexico in 2000, and has long believed that the area (and Brisbane at large) needed more traditional Mexican eateries. After a number of years searching for a suitable home, Rebecca jumped on the chance to take on the Florence Street space and is already hard at work refurbishing the kitchen and interior to suit her vision of an informal family-friendly venue. With a capacity of roughly 80 patrons, Rebecca is aiming to cater to guests in a restaurant-style setting, rather than a bar. The food itself will be inspired by Rebecca’s home region of Bajío, a state known for its flavoursome cuisine. Alongside head chef Ariel Becerra (who also hails from the Bajío region), Rebecca is formulating a menu that draws influence from Mexico’s indigenous and Spanish heritage. Think traditional enchiladas, moles, soups and al pastor-style tacos, bolstered by a selection of Mexican beers, cocktails and more. La Patrona Mexican Cuisine is aiming to open in mid-May, with a large mural in the works that is set to be unveiled in conjunction with the Brisbane Street Art Festival. We’ll have a closer look for you once La Patrona Mexican Cuisine is open.

One Fish Two Fish
In the wake of the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak, several Brisbane restaurants are changing how they operate to help mitigate the risk of exposure for staff and customers alike. Kangaroo Point’s One Fish Two Fish is today launching a dinner-at-home option for folks that are enacting social-distancing measures, but still want to enjoy some restaurant-cooked fare. The initiative, called One Fish, You Fish, will offer a different selection of take-home dishes every day, starting with the likes of panko-crumbed calamari, Atlantic salmon with wild grains, Tiger prawn salad, European-style pork sausages with zingy slaw, plus a bunch of sides. If you’re keen to feed the family, One Fish Two Fish is also serving its regular value packs, filled with beer-battered cod, calamari rings, shoestring fries and garden salad. The eatery is still open for business as usual and is adhering to a strict health and safety program to prevent threat of infection. Keep your eye on the One Fish Two Fish Instagram page for the daily take-home options.

Donna Chang
In case you missed the news, top-tier Chinese restaurant Donna Chang has launched a breakfast service! Ghanem Group’s executive chef Jake Nicholson has put together a menu of day starters imbued with some delicious Chinese influences. Stand-out options include char siu roasted pork with crispy fried egg, potato hash, tamari and house pickles, Chinese-style prawn omelette with oyster sauce, garlic and chilli, and the smashed avocado on toast with shallot oil, roasted tomato and typhoon-shelter crumb.
