Pavement Whispers: Volume 114 March 21

From whispers of new wine bars to free grilled cheese, The Weekend Edition is always on the search for the latest news in Brisbane, dedicated to ensuring its readers are in the know. When we put our ears to the pavement this week, this is what we found out …

On the Side
Restaurateurs Nick Pinn and Laurie Rogenkamp have got a little something going on the side – on the side of Vaquero, that is. As of today, works will begin on the pair’s next project (they’re also responsible for Brisbane City’s Malt Dining, Newstead’s Malt Pier and Malt Traders bottle shops) called On the Side by Vaquero, which, funnily enough, will neighbour Vaquero and The Albion Butchery on Sandgate Road. Taking over the former site of Xavi’s Espresso, Nick and Laurie will take the next two to three weeks to give the space a fresh new look, with plans to open in the second week of April. Once complete, On the Side will operate as an espresso bar by day and a cocktail and wine bar come evening from Wednesday to Saturday. A small light breakfast menu will be on offer during the day, including pastries from nearby Vanilla Pod, while evening tipples can be accompanied by freshly shaved charcuterie from The Albion Butchery.

Melt Brothers Free Grilled Cheese Day Laneway Party
Yep, you read that correctly. Free. Grilled. Cheese. In celebration of Grilled Cheese Sandwich Day (yes, it’s a thing), Gresham Lane’s Melt Brothers is throwing a laneway party on Saturday April 8, and everyone’s invited. From 10:00 am to 12:00 pm, the hole-in-the-wall eatery will be handing out free cheesy goodness, with your choice of the triple-cheese The Mouse Trap, the Holy Cheesus with ham, cheese and relish, the vegetarian Hippie Cheese and the M.C. Cheesy stuffed with macaroni and cheese and maple bacon. The Melt Brothers gang has also organised a DJ to spin some cheesy tracks on the day. Head to our Event Guide for full details!

The Stuffed Badger
What do you get when three seasoned hospitality veterans join forces? You get Bowen Hills’ new wine and tapas bar, The Stuffed Badger. After planning a joint project for five years, owners Pete, Terry and Tj are due to open The Stuffed Badger on April 11. Head chef Pete has crafted a menu of grazing bites, featuring the likes of four-cheese and serrano arancini, and beetroot-cured salmon with confit shallot and horseradish cream. With extensive experience in the industry, Terry and Tj will oversee the liquid delights, concocting tailor-made cocktails (there will be no set list) and offering a small selection of wines to pair with food.

La Lune
We’ve been waiting patiently for Paul McGivern’s La Lune to open its doors and we finally have some exciting news – the South Brisbane wine bar is hopefully due to welcome patrons as of this Friday March 24. Sommelier Olivia Evans from sibling venue The Wolfe will be making the transition to the Fish Lane bar, overseeing the wine list that was crafted with the help of winemaker Nick Farr. Food will be simple but perfect for pairing with wine, including cheese, charcuterie and a handful of mains. We’ll have full delicious details for you next week!
