Pavement Whispers: Volume 115 March 28

From whispers of secret rooftop bars to new gastropubs, The Weekend Edition is always on the search for the latest news in Brisbane, dedicated to ensuring its readers are in the know. When we put our ears to the pavement this week, this is what we found out …

200 Adelaide Street rooftop bar
You know that stunning heritage-listed building that sits above Anzac Square on the corner of Adelaide and Edward Streets? Well it may soon be home to a new rooftop bar. Property group Charter Hall has submitted a development application for the 323-sqm space, with plans to transform it into a sub-tropical bar that will embrace the building’s existing heritage elements, featuring indoor and outdoor spaces lush with greenery. The site’s corner location will provide views over the city and Spring Hill, with glimpses of South Bank, the Botanic Gardens and Kangaroo Point. Details are just in their preliminary stages, but a glimpse at the development application has us pretty darn excited for what could be.

The Montague Hotel
West End will soon welcome a new local hangout, with The Montague Hotel set to open its doors on Wednesday April 19 on the corner of Montague Road and Kurilpa Street. The gastropub – already nicknamed ‘The Monty’ – will serve up a menu for all tastes, ranging from home-style comfort food to superfood dishes. Expect to find pub-style eats such as burgers, beer-battered pickles and slow-cooked meats from the charcoal rotisserie, alongside healthy options of rainbow wraps and seed salads. Copper beer tanks will hang as a feature over the bar, which will be home to more than 17 premium and craft beers on tap – including The Monty’s own brews as well as local favourites. We’ll have more details for you soon.

Arrosto Bar and Grill
While the temperature may not have dropped much yet, our stomachs are already craving the warming deliciousness of winter comfort food. Luckily for us, Arrosto Bar and Grill is due to open in Paddington in the coming weeks. The name Arrosto itself – meaning ‘roast’ in Italian – should give you an idea of what’s going to be on offer. Low, slow and wholesome dishes will warm you from the inside out, with the likes of slow-roasted lamb shoulders, beef cheeks, lamb shanks and woodfired pizzas featuring on the menu.

Spirit House Cocktail Bar
Yadina’s Spirit House will soon unveil a new cocktail bar in amongst its tropical oasis. The restaurant’s wine expert Yann Audran is taking charge of the space, currently experimenting with concoctions, barrel ageing cocktails and infusing spirits. Yann has taken influence from the contemporary bars of Thailand and plans to give guests a bespoke experience, mixing drinks specific to their personal tastes. The U-shaped bar opens up onto the Spirit House’s Balinese courtyard, with bar and street food on one side, and a private dining space on the other. Executive chef Tom Swapp will oversee the food, with snacks such as Thai beef jerky, son-in-law soldiers with chilli tamarind sauce and massaman lamb party pies comprising the street-food selection. The bar is set to open in May – we’ll have more for you then.

Gelato Messina
The wait is finally over – Gelato Messina is opening its doors in South Brisbane this week! The much-anticipated opening is set to be this Wednesday evening, meaning you can finally dip your spoon into that icy Messina goodness on a regular basis. To celebrate the opening, the store will be scooping up a special flavour for the first week – the QUEENSLANDAARRR!!! – melding ginger gelato with pineapple cake and Bundaberg rum caramel. Keep an eye on The Weekend Edition this Thursday for full details!
