Pavement Whispers: Volume 301 March 30

From news of a brand-new wine bar for Paddington to a second brewpub in the works for a booming Brisbane brewery, The Weekend Edition is always on the search for the latest food news in Brisbane, dedicated to ensuring its readers are in the know. When we put our ears to the pavement this week, this is what we found out …

Noir
Oenophiles of the inner west will be chuffed to hear that Paddington will soon score a new wine bar when Noir opens on Given Terrace in May. The brainchild of The Black Lab Coffee Co.’s Sam Holman and Eli Rami, Noir has been an idea the two have kicked about ever since opening cosy coffee spot Blackout on Latrobe Terrace in 2019. The new after-dark venture will see Eli source and curate a selection of drops that encompasses classic vintages and new-world varieties, with an overarching focus on minimal-intervention winemaking processes. Although the wine list will be fairly compact, the crew is eager to show off a selection of boutique and hard-to-find labels – the kind of vino that you won’t be able to find at your local bottle shop. Noir will also keep stomachs lined with a charcuterie menu favouring morsels sourced from local producers. Further details are being kept tightly under wraps, but rest assured that we’ll have more details when they come to light.

White Lies Brewing
Sumner-based craft-beer and distilling operation White Lies Brewing is set to have a big year, with plans in the works for a second brewpub space. After operations reached a threshold at the brewery’s Spine Street headquarters, White Lies owner Lee McAlister-Smiley figured the business needed to relocate or grow with a second site. Lee opted for the latter and quickly began scouting Brisbane’s western suburbs for a suitable space, finding the ideal location in Seventeen Mile Rocks – walking distance from Rocks Riverside Park. With the site secured, Lee is in the process of lodging applications to develop it into a family-friendly and community-oriented destination as well as a space for White Lies Brewing to grow and expand its output. Lee has secured new brewing gear that will allow for the production of just under 200,000 litres per annum as well as a canning line to boost White Lies’ packaged product. As for the brewpub itself, expect an industrial-chic aesthetic, room for a kids play area and plenty of seating inside and out. The creation of Lee’s spirit-based offshoot Ginesis will remain at the Sumner hub, while much of the beer production (barring some of White Lies’ limited brews) will take place at Seventeen Mile Rocks. Much of the above is still pending approval, but if everything goes to plan Lee is aiming to start beer production at site by the end of June, with the official opening of the brewpub slated for the end of this year.

Australian Venue Co.’s Secret Sippers
Ever wanted to get paid to eat? Australian Venue Co. – the hospitality giant that operates 160 pubs and bars nationwide (including 82 Queensland locations such as Darling & Co., Regatta HotelRiverland and The Wickham) – has put the call out for discerning foodies keen to give feedback on their dining experience at AVC venues for a little bit of dosh. Applications are now open for the Secret Sipper program, which will see a team of inconspicuous diners visit a different local pub or bar each month, interact with staff (in a discreet manner), enjoy a meal and then provide a survey and written report detailing the experience and suggesting areas for improvement. Secret Sippers receive a $30 meal allowance as well as $200 each time they submit a review. Sound like you’re the right person for the job? There are 18 Secret Sipper positions available in Queensland – click here to apply.

Deliveroo and DoorDash free lockdown delivery
While Brisbane’s current snap three-day lockdown is a bummer on many levels, it does serve as a great reminder of the importance of supporting local – especially our homegrown dining scene. If you’re intent on avoiding crowds over the next few days, Deliveroo and DoorDash are dropping its delivery fees to encourage folks to support local eateries directly. From now until midnight Wednesday March 31, both services will be covering the cost of delivery for its combined roster of restaurants, which tallies in the thousands. If you need a few essential items, groceries and convenience stores are also included in this deal – no more fighting over toilet paper! If there’s a venue not included on either app, do yourself a favour and head to The Weekend Edition’s Instagram page for a running list of venues remaining open for takeaway throughout the week.
