Pavement Whispers: Volume 162 March 6

From whispers of free ramen to a new Asian-inspired laneway bar, The Weekend Edition is always on the search for the latest news in Brisbane, dedicated to ensuring its readers are in the know. When we put our ears to the pavement this week, this is what we found out …

Free Hai Hai ramen
It’s a truly wonderful day when you go to someone’s birthday party and you get a present. Come Monday March 12, you’re invited to celebrate Hai Hai’s second birthday with one of the best presents known to man – free ramen. That’s right, from 5:00 pm the Paddington favourite will be dishing up 200 free bowls of its pork tonkotsu, chicken and veg ramen. The goodies don’t stop there – the first 50 customers will receive a free Hai Hai t-shirt and you can settle in to watch the final of the ramen slurping competition, where four ramen lovers will race to finish their bowl, the victor walking away with a $500 Hai Hai ramen voucher. Jump to our Event Guide for full details.

Superfly Funkeye
Speaking of Hai Hai, the team is busy working away on another project for us to get excited about. No, we’re not talking about Coorparoo’s Special Rub (that meaty bad boy is opening next week – look out on The Weekend Edition for full details), we’re talking about Superfly Funkeye. The laneway bar and eatery is due to open in mid-March, around the corner from Day Made by Coffee Supreme on ARIA Property Group’s lush Eden Lane in Woolloongabba, with the fit-out currently underway by Woodsters’ Oliver Burscough. Described as a spiritual cousin to Hai Hai, the 50-seat Superfly Funkeye will serve up modern Asian-inspired finger food, alongside a well-curated selection of wine and cocktails. Expect to find the likes of snapper with fresh wasabi, ginger and nashi pear, pumpkin with furikake and miso, steamed buns, Moreton Bay bug rolls, and kastu sandwiches.

Black Hide by Gambaro at Treasury Brisbane
The Gambaro Group is continuing its growth into Brisbane City, following the announcement of Persone in Brisbane Quarter. Its latest venture will be in partnership with Treasury Brisbane, with the two hospitality groups joining forces to create Black Hide by Gambaro at Treasury Brisbane. The new venue will reimagine the space previously occupied by The Kitty cocktail bar and is due to start serving an array of succulent steaks and seafood as of mid-2018. While the menu will be similar to Black Hide’s Caxton Street sibling, diners can expect to find the addition of higher-marbled steak cut offerings and new seafood dishes.

Free Halo Top ice-cream
Yep, more free things for your belly. This Friday March 9, Halo Top is setting up in King George Square to give away ten thousand tubs of ice-cream from 3:00–6:00 pm. Halo Top is renowned for its low-calorie, low-sugar, high-protein treats, claiming its ice-cream is so healthy you could even have it as a post-workout snack. So it comes as no surprise that they’ll also be running free sweat sessions on the day – you can register to join one of four free Inspire Cycle high-energy cycle classes on the day, which will get you a 30-minute workout, a Halo Top t-shirt and a tub of Halo Top ice-cream. Head to our Event Guide for full details.

W Brisbane official opening date
A quick final update – we’ve just heard word that Brisbane City’s much-anticipated W Brisbane has announced its official opening for Friday June 1, 2018. That signature W Hotels goodness is so close we can almost taste it!
