Pavement Whispers: Volume 120 May 2

From whispers of giant cookie sandwiches to igloo-studded pop-up bars, The Weekend Edition is always on the search for the latest news in Brisbane, dedicated to ensuring its readers are in the know. When we put our ears to the pavement this week, this is what we found out …

Butterbing cookie sandwich pop-up
If you consider yourself a dessert connoisseur, then you’ve surely heard of Melbourne’s famous Butterbing cookie sandwiches. With two dark-chocolate brownie cookies smushing a centre of buttercream in some pretty drool-worthy flavours, it’s not hard to see why they’ve caused such a fuss in the southern state – oh, and did we mention they’re also gluten free? At long last Brisbane is getting its hands on these sweet babies, when Morning After hosts an exclusive Butterbing pop-up this Saturday May 6 and Sunday May 7. Salted caramel, Nutella, peanut butter and vanilla bean cookie sandwiches will be up for grabs until stock runs out, plus if you take a snap of your Butterbing and enter Morning After’s Instagram competition, you will go in the draw to win a giant 1.5-kg Butterboom – that’s one big-ass cookie sandwich. Keep an eye on Morning After’s Instagram page for entry details. If you can’t make it this weekend don’t fret – Butterbing has just started delivering its online orders to Brisbane.

Johnny’s Pizzeria
Late-night pizza with a side of disco music? We’re very interested. This is the vibe of Moubment Group’s newest project, Johnny’s Pizzeria, which is set to open this Friday May 5. The pizza joint is taking over the hole-in-the-wall space previously occupied by kiosk., transforming it into a kitsch-themed Italian eatery – complete with classic Campari bottles and red-and-white chequered tablecloths – with seating spilling out into Bakery Lane. Johnny’s Pizzeria will serve up fresh pizzas late into the evening (from Laruche’s kitchen), as well as cocktails and its own house wine. We’ll have full details for you on Friday!

Italian Street Kitchen
If you can’t get down with Italian food, we need to talk – how is it possible not to love pizza, pasta and meats as tender as your own mama makes? Italian Street Kitchen is on its way to bring a little slice of Europe to Brisbane, set to take diners on a journey into contemporary Roman street-food culture. The food on offer here will be all about embracing the basics, focusing on using simple ingredients and methods to create authentic yet elegant dishes – think light and crisp pizza, pasta made fresh daily and an indulgent spit roast. Patrons can even watch traditional Italian preparation and cooking methods taking place before their eyes as the chefs create magic in the open-plan kitchen. Italian Street Kitchen is set to open in the new Gasworks Plaza site at the beginning of June – keep an eye on The Weekend Edition for further information.

Greenhaus Coffee
It’s a question that Ali and Brett Hutley of Botanica Real Food have been asked for years – where’s the coffee? They finally have the answer, in the form of their new caffeinated sister store, Greenhaus Coffee. The petite coffee spot is due to open on June 1, just two doors down from Botanica’s Teneriffe store. Much like its salad sibling, Greenhaus Coffee will be predominantly takeaway, with grab-and-go options such as breakfast parfaits, green tahini and blistered tomato tarts with fresh basil, and mini spinach and parmesan brioche toasties. A small selection of Ali and Brett’s famous cakes will also be on offer, paired perfectly with Allpress Coffee. More details are coming soon!

Absolut Winter Pop-up Bar
If you’ve been outside in the past couple of weeks, you may have noticed that Brisbane is actually experiencing some semblance of seasonal variation. Hallelujah! To celebrate the drop in mercury, Customs House has teamed up with Absolut to create the Absolut Winter Pop-up Bar – and they’ve gone all out. The courtyard will be studded with igloos, Nordic-styled furnishings and fur-draped lounge chairs to create a toasty winter wonderland atmosphere. Exclusive Absolut winter creations will make up the drinks offering, with the signature cocktail featuring spiced vodka and cranberry topped with meringue foam. Guests can fill up on gourmet cheese plates with Swiss gruyere and triple-cream brie, warming venison stew, crispy pork-cheek sliders and chocolate fondue. The pop-up starts on Thursday May 18 and will be running through until the end of August – check our Event Guide for more details.

The Single Guys CBD
Kenmore coffee favourite The Single Guys is headed for Brisbane City, with a second location set to open in late May/early June. The fit-out for The Single Guys CBD is currently underway, with Studio Lagom bringing the minimalist Charlotte Street space (complete with a breezy outdoor area) to life. The new cafe will be similar to its Kenmore sibling, serving up single-origin coffee alongside a fresh breakfast and lunch menu, plus the addition of a tap beer and wine offering.  We’ll have more details for you soon!

The Plateia at Paniyiri Greek Festival
We all know that Paniyiri Greek Festival is a stunning celebration of an awesome and vibrant culture, but we’d be lying to ourselves if we said that the food didn’t play a huge part in our participation. This year sees an all-new culinary experience unveiled especially for the festival – loosen your belt for The Plateia! Setting up shop beside The Greek Club, The Plateia will emulate the sights, smells and sounds of a traditional Greek village, serving up a whopping range of authentic fare. The Kafenio has your coffee cravings covered, Zaharoplasteio will be a hotspot for sweets, two distinct tavernas specialising in meat and seafood will be popping up, and the Ouzeri will be pumping out delicious drinks. Be sure to visit The Plateia when Paniyiri comes to town on May 20–21.
