Pavement Whispers: Volume 223 May 21

From whispers of a low'n'slow barbecue joint for Windsor and a superstar chef's speaking tour of Australia, The Weekend Edition is always on the search for the latest news in Brisbane, dedicated to ensuring its readers are in the know. When we put our ears to the pavement this week, this is what we found out …

Proof BBQ & Booze
Kicking off proceedings this week, we’ve got word of a new low’n’slow barbecue joint and bar that’ll give you preemptive meat sweats. Proof BBQ & Booze is the name of the forthcoming barbecue and bourbon hub, which is taking over the site formerly home to Harry’s Diner in Windsor. The spot comes from Ryan Lane (previously general manager of The Gresham) and barbecue chef extraordinaire Michael Cameron, who are putting the effort in to do justice to the beloved art of smoky barbecue. Proof BBQ & Booze will be serving a la carte options and meat by the pound, with cuts smoked daily across a combination of cabinet and offset smokers over iron bark and fruit woods. Michael’s menu is shaping up to include all the classics, including mouth-watering beef brisket, beef short ribs, tomahawk steaks, pork ribs, pulled pork and chicken wings, plus a burger offering served on buns baked on site daily. Speaking of making things on site, Michael is also making his own bacon, burger patties, sausages, pickles, and rubs and sauces – the latter of which will be available for takeaway. Sides will include mac’n’cheese, burnt ends, shrimp and grits, beef chilli and more, plus desserts including smoked stone-fruit cobblers and smoked vanilla bean bourbon banoffee pie. As for the drinks, Ryan is tailoring the bar with a heavy bourbon focus (we’re talking more than 120 bottles), as well as other select spirits, craft cocktails and beers, as well as wines by the glass. Proof BBQ & Booze is aiming for a July opening, but rest assured we’ll let you know when the smokers fire up for the first time.

An Evening With Matty Matheson
When it comes to the world of celebrity TV chefs, Matty Matheson is a different breed entirely. The Canadian culinary legend has crafted a huge following thanks in equal parts to his larger-than-life personality and amazing food, garnering international acclaim through his shows Suppertime and Dead Set on Life as well as a best-selling cookbook. Matty is bringing his skills to The Brightside for one night only – but not in the capacity that you might think. This intimate show will present Matty on stage for a session of no-holds-barred conversation, giving audiences a chance to ask questions and hear all about his rather remarkable life and career. Tickets are on sale and sure to be snapped up fast – for details, head to our Event Guide.

The Weekend Edition’s EAT/drink Awards
In case you missed the announcement last week, The Weekend Edition’s famed reader-voted epicurean poll – the EAT/drink Awards – are back in 2019! Every year we give you – our beloved reader – the chance to crown your favourite spots to eat, drink and play as Brisbane’s best, and we’re set to kick off festivities for this year. Nominations for the EAT/drink Awards are now open, with 20 categories to choose from ranging from the hottest new cafe, the city’s finest restaurant and Brisbane’s best bar, to where does Brisbane’s tastiest cheap eats, which coffee spot always nails its pour, and what is the best BYO joint in town. This year, our very good mates and nationally renowned craft-beer makers, Newstead Brewing Co. are coming onboard as official sponsors for the awards, and they’ll be offering some great prizes for those that nail the most correct votes for category winners. In addition to the voting portion of the awards, we’re also bringing back our special bonus category – Best Food Porn. This category is voted exclusively on Instagram – drool-worthy dishes that are snapped and posted to Instagram and tagged @_weekendedition and #TWEFoodPorn are in the running to win! Enough dilly dallying – if you’re eager to give love to the spots that keep you fed, watered and entertained, click here to cast your nominations! The nomination period will close at 11:59 pm on Sunday June 2, and official voting begins on Friday June 7.
