Pavement Whispers: Volume 123 May 23

From whispers of password-protected speakeasies and new neighbourhood bars, The Weekend Edition is always on the search for the latest news in Brisbane, dedicated to ensuring its readers are in the know. When we put our ears to the pavement this week, this is what we found out …

Jessie’s Girl
It’s not just a killer song by Rick Springfield (although let’s take a few moments to listen to it again) – Jessie’s Girl is also the name of the latest venture from Scout’s Suse Whitehouse and Candy Smith. Jessie’s Girl, however, will be quite different from Scout – it’s a neighbourhood bar and eatery just a short stroll down Petrie Terrace from its cafe sibling, in the space formerly occupied by Hops Scotch and Beans. Suse and Candy are still working on the menu, but you can expect boozy brunches through to evening bites, with a strong liquid focus on spritzes. You’re going to wish that you had Jessie’s Girl when it opens around mid-July – we’ll keep you in the loop with more details soon.

Legends Bar
The winding streets of London and New York City are known for harbouring hidden, ultra-exclusive bars that aren’t meant for regular passers-by. Next week Brisbane’s inner city will welcome a super-secret speakeasy of its own when Legends Bar quietly opens in a very hard-to-find location. When we say hard to find, we mean it – we don’t even know where it is! All we can confirm at this stage is that the bar will reveal is location as longitudinal and latitudinal coordinates, and will open only to patrons that know the password for that day. The password will be posted on the Legends Bar Instagram and Facebook pages, which will provide access to those keen to sip on top-shelf gins, whiskies and rums while snacking on a range of micro tapas.

Little Miss Kay’s
Have you been hanging out at home, flicking through UberEATS, when suddenly Miss Kay’s Woolloongabba pops up, despite not having a restaurant in Woolloongabba? Well, we finally have the answer to your confusion. The Miss Kay’s fam has been testing the waters for a couple of months, in the lead up to the opening of Little Miss Kay’s in, you guessed it, Woolloongabba. Due to open early June, the burger joint will be smaller than its Brisbane City and Mitchelton siblings (as its name suggests), offering more of a grab-and-go concept for delivery and takeaway – meaning limited dine-in seating and no licensed bar. There’s nothing little about the menu though – the full Miss Kay’s burger and sides menu will be available. The exact location is still under wraps – look out for full details in the coming weeks.

Carolina Kitchen
Any self-respecting fan of authentic American barbecue will tell you that the fare at Carolina Kitchen is up there with the best in Brisbane. If you have ever lost yourself in the sauce-coated bliss of a rib and wing feast, then you should know that Carolina Kitchen is having twins! Carolina Kitchen is currently relocating its Macaulay Street headquarters in Coorparoo to the Coorparoo Bowls Club, which will hopefully be up and running at the end of this week. Next week, Carolina Kitchen will also open another outlet on James Street in the form of a shipping container kiosk near The Box on James, offering a slightly condensed menu to inner-city go-getters. That means no hoagies, but there will be plenty of other heavenly comfort food to sample. Keep your eyes on The Weekend Edition for more details.

Little Brothers Mussel Festival
Calling all shell-heads – mussel season is upon us! To celebrate the forthcoming bounty of South Australian blue-lipped mussels inundating seafood spots, Mussel Brothers and Kinkawooka Shellfish are getting together to throw a shindig at Wandering Cooks in West End on Saturday June 10. The Little Brothers Mussel Festival is set to be heaven for any mussel maniac, with tickets including unlimited mussels (that’s right – unlimited), a selection of rock oysters on arrival, Columbian cuisine by Latin Manna, cheese tasting by White Gold Creamery, craft beer and wines, and live entertainment.
