Pavement Whispers: Volume 198 November 13

From whispers of covert bars to Hollywood-style party venues, The Weekend Edition is always on the search for the latest news in Brisbane, dedicated to ensuring its readers are in the know. When we put our ears to the pavement this week, this is what we found out …

Mr. Mista
The space previously occupied by Nickel Kitchen & Bar in Fortitude Valley has remained empty for quite some time, but is finally being brought back to life with a new bar and eatery. Mr. Mista is due to open in the space on Thursday November 29, with the $2-million fit-out (including a $70,000 custom lighting installation) currently in progress. The venue will draw its inspiration from the cocktail bars of Los Angeles, such as Hyde Sunset, promising to offer a tantalising dining experience by day and a Hollywood-style party scene by night, allowing guests to party until 3:00 am. A vibrant cocktail list will sit alongside a Southeast Asian-influenced share-plate menu – think bites such as tropical chicken karaage bao buns with caramelised burnt pineapple and sriracha mayo, crispy pork-belly banh mi sliders, smoked massaman beef curry, and adobo ‘dynamite’ spring rolls. Mr. Mista comes from a group of seasoned hospitality veterans, who have experience opening and operating venues such as Eleven Rooftop Bar, Cloudland, Jellyfish, The Jetty and e’cco bistro. We’ll have more details for you soon.

Next Episode Bar
In the immortal words of hip-hop legend Lil Wayne, “real G’s move in silence like lasagne”. Sage advice aside, the phrase rings especially true for Fish Lane’s newest watering hole Next Episode Bar, which has been outfitting its space in secret ahead of its surprise opening this Friday. The bar is the brainchild of barber-turned-bar-owner Steve Pelecas, who is installing the bar behind a hidden door at his latest South Brisbane barbershop space. Inspired by the secretive speakeasy culture of hip-hop mecca New York City, Next Episode Bar will be accessible only through the barbershop. A secret code found on social media is needed to enter – the hidden door will only reveal itself after the password is entered into a special phone on site. What lies on the other side of the door is being kept under wraps until the bar’s opening, but we’ve been told to expect a vibrant neon-jungle atmosphere with killer murals, craft-beer tinnies and hip-hop themed cocktails. We’ll have a closer look for you this week!

King Street Bakery
Since relocating Montrachet to Bowen Hills’ thriving promenade King Street, owner and head chef Shannon Kellam has been greatly expanding the restaurant’s baking capabilities. Beyond rolling out a new range of bread for dine-in patrons to devour, Shannon and his team opened Montrachet Boulangerie on King Street last December, debuting a selection of treats from handcrafted croissants to decadent eclairs. Now the crew is taking things up another notch – closing the boulangerie (which will be converted into Montrachet’s new dining space) and shifting operations down the road to the former home of The Pine Kitchen, transforming it into new pastry palace King Street Bakery. Due to open in late November, King Street Bakery will serve up its choice range of baked goods as well as a la carte breakfast and lunch options. Keep your eyes peeled for more information in the coming weeks!

Palace Platinum James Street
Some exciting changes are happening at James Street’s resident cinema, Palace Centro. First, it’s changed its name to Palace James Street, but as of this Friday November 16 it will be taking the cinema experience to the next level with the opening of Palace Platinum James Street. The luxurious cinemas will include cushy reclining leather chairs, in-cinema dining and a premium selection of wine, cocktails and craft beers to enjoy during the film. Palace Platinum James Street has partnered with some of its James Street neighbours for its food offering, including Jocelyn’s Provisions and Chow House, and film-goers will have access to ‘silent service’, which allows them to order additional fare during the movie without disruption. Palace James Street will also have seven fully-licensed traditional cinemas – we’ll have full details for you next week.
