Pavement Whispers: Volume 249 November 19

From news of a new brewery in Brisbane's north to an inner-city move for Jocelyn's Provisions, The Weekend Edition is always on the search for the latest news in Brisbane, dedicated to ensuring its readers are in the know. When we put our ears to the pavement this week, this is what we found out …

FICK Brewing Company
Craft-beer lovers of Brisbane’s northern suburbs will soon have another local brewery to frequent when FICK Brewing Company quietly opens in Northgate this Friday. The brainchild of Nadresha Costa and Fabrizio Ceccarelli, FICK Brewing Co.’s origins stretch back to when the couple first met and bonded over beer in Luxembourg. The duo started brewing together while Fabrizio was simultaneously studying the brewing craft in Brussels, dabbling with Belgian-style beers and dreaming of opening a brewhouse of their own. The opportunity presented itself when the couple discovered a suitable location on Old Toombul Road in Northgate after relocating to Brisbane in 2016. After securing initial approvals, work commenced on establishing a 12-hectolitre and five fermenter brewing operation in the site’s rear shed, while a taproom and outdoor beer garden (designed to have a European bar feel) was constructed towards the front. Nadresha and Fabrizio’s plan is to brew Belgian-style beers, but while they’ve been waiting for the brewery to be fully commissioned, they have been brewing at Glass House Brewery on the Sunshine Coast, whipping up two styles to start with. Although Nadresha and Fabrizio expect they’ll be brewing their true styles on location within the next week or two, come Friday locals will be able to sample a golden ale table beer and a red IPA, in addition to a saison from Gold Coast’s Madocke Beer Brewing Company and a sour from Glass House Brewery. Stay tuned for a closer look at FICK Brewing Company soon!

New Farm Deli
Less than six months since a fire completely gutted its longstanding home, the New Farm Deli crew has announced that it will officially reopen at Merthyr Village on Friday November 29. Award-winning commercial kitchen designer Food Strategy has worked with New Farm Deli’s owners Vince and Maria Anello to reconstitute many of the elements from the original deli-cafe’s design (cabinetry, wine racks and finishes), but have also added some modern additions to the kitchen to cater for an increased customer demand. Long-time customers will be able to join the Anello family in celebrating its next chapter, with a special morning of festivities to be held at the deli on the day of its reopening, starting from 6:00 am. Expect plenty of Italian fare with a special pop-up stall serving pastries, focaccia and paninis, while jumping castles, face painters and live music will keep the whole family entertained. What’s more, New Farm Deli will donate all proceeds from every coffee purchased between 6:00–11:00 am to the Rural Fire Brigades Association Queensland Inc. We’ll have an in-depth look at the reborn New Farm Deli once it officially reopens!

Jocelyn’s Provisions
Beloved sweets and savouries dispensary Jocelyn’s Provisions is expanding … again! The long-running cakes, bread and pastries outfit will be opening its fourth location in the heart of Brisbane’s CBD in mid-December. After hosting a successful pop-up store at 480 Queen in 2016, the Jocelyn’s crew has been eyeing opportunities to return with something permanent, finally snagging an ideal spot just a stone’s throw from Eagle Street’s Riverside Centre. The new location will see the Jocelyn’s team ramping up its offer, bolstering its already phenomenal selection of goodies with some fresh breakfast and lunch items tailored to the time-poor crowd. Jocelyn’s sandwich and salad division will be whipping up a selection of mouth-watering eats, served alongside established favourites such as Jocelyn’s savoury pies, sausage rolls and pre-made meals. The new location will also be selling a range of dips, fruits and cheese platters for those seeking a reliable catering option for meetings. Jocelyn’s Provisions has also started taking orders for Christmas, with its catalogue online now.

New Farm Confectionery
Since opening its new flagship store and production facility in August last year, cherished chocolatier New Farm Confectionery has gone from strength to strength. This week, the operation’s upward trajectory will continue with the arrival of its second active outlet in the heart of Brisbane Airport’s Domestic Terminal this week. Winning the tender amid stiff competition from other chocolate manufacturers, the new location will position New Farm Confectionery in a high-traffic zone of the terminal’s recently redeveloped portion. The space will boast an eye-catching fit-out designed by architects Hogg and Lamb, including striking copper accents, space-saving stepped-down shelving and sleek marble finishes. As one would expect, the store will be chock-full of the brand’s handcrafted confections and chocolate, as well as a pick-and-mix selection of chocolate-coated nuts, cakes, tarts, pastries, signature hot chocolates, sandwich cookies and coffee from esteemed local roasters Wolff Coffee. If you’ve got a travel plans, make sure you give yourself time to browse New Farm Confectionery’s new outlet when it opens at the end of this week.
