Pavement Whispers: Volume 199 November 20

From whispers of Alejandro Cancino's new project to a heritage steakhouse, The Weekend Edition is always on the search for the latest news in Brisbane, dedicated to ensuring its readers are in the know. When we put our ears to the pavement this week, this is what we found out …

Grass Fed
Last week we shared details of covert bar Next Episode opening in Fish Lane (we’ll have more for you Thursday) – this week, more Fish Lane news. Lauded chef Alejandro Caninco (ex-Urbane) has a new venture in the works, casual plant-based eatery Grass Fed. The celebrated vegan chef has partnered with Brisbane Vegan Markets founder John Garrison on the project, bringing together each of their creations under one roof. Grass Fed will showcase Alejandro’s recently launched alternative protein vEEF (through his plant-based Fënn Foods) and John’s popular I Should Coco Ice Cream (coconut soft serve) across breakfast and lunch, with a simple plant-based menu consisting of six burgers, three sides and three ice-creams. The burgers available at Grass Fed will be exclusive to the intimate Fish Lane eatery, with Alejandro creating special vEEF blends that won’t be available anywhere else. Grass Fed is due to open in mid-December – we’ll keep you posted.

Bakehouse Steakhouse
When we think of steakhouses we generally envisage a masculine setting, red-leather booths, moody timber finishes, perhaps a hide or two. When it comes to Bakehouse Steakhouse – think again. Taking over the heritage bakery on Darling Street, Ipswich’s new restaurant will be a bright pink-and-white-hued space shaking up the traditional steakhouse concept. Bakehouse Steakhouse comes from brothers Nick, Alastair and Chris Stevenson, who acquired the heritage building a couple of years ago. The area holds particular significance to the trio – not only did they grow up there, but their grandfather was a regular at the neighbouring Commercial Hotel, the spot fondly known in his memory as Clarry’s Corner. Bakehouse Steakhouse will take its inspiration from classic French bistros, serving up steak frites (complete with bottomless fries and salad), one burger, a pork cutlet and rotating market specials. Five cuts of Stanbroke steak will be available, plus selections from the dry-aging cabinet. The restaurant will also feature a dessert bar – complete with a special soft-serve machine allowing mix-ins McFlurry style – and a breezy pastel-hued courtyard perfect for soaking up the sun with a spritz in hand. Expect to hear of the opening in early December.

El Camino Cantina’s Tex-Mex Fiesta
It’s been a big couple of months for King Street, but the booming strip has one more arrival up its sleeve before the end of the year. A little while back we told you about the forthcoming opening of Rockpool Dining Group’s colourful Tex-Mex eatery El Camino Cantina and now we’ve got news of the 300-seat venue’s opening celebrations. El Camino Cantina will open to the public on Friday November 30, with a three-day fiesta to celebrate its launch. Festivities will commence on Friday night with a ticketed party complete with Tex-Mex bites, margaritas and more, while the rest of the weekend will offer up great deals on El Camino Cantina’s food (we’re talking tacos, buffalo wings, chargrilled fajitas, fat burritos and more), colourful sombreros, DJs at night, and the unveiling of El Camino’s weekend brunch menu. A fiesta this big will require a week-long siesta to recover, but be sure to stay alert for closer look at El Camino Cantina on The Weekend Edition.

Alex Lam Cheung x Kimchi Cheese Smile Pop-up Dinner
Alex Lam Cheung has manned the pans at a few culinary hotspots around town and now the chef is stepping out on his own, hosting a pop-up dinner at East Brisbane’s new Korean-influenced eatery Kimchi Cheese Smile on Monday December 10. The chef will be serving up an innovative combination of flavours from the South Pacific and Oceania at large across six courses, paired with wines and alcoholic beverages from New Zealand, Australia and Korea. The evening will include two sittings – one at 5:30 pm and another at 7:40 pm. Tickets are on sale for $145 per person and includes alcohol pairings. If you’re interested in snagging a seat, send an email with your name and contact details to [email protected] or shoot a DM to Alex via his Instagram account.
