The Boundary Hotel
It’s been a long time between drinks, but West End’s iconic The Boundary Hotel is set to officially reopen its doors this Thursday November 29, just in time for summer. The historic pub, which dates back to 1864, has been undergoing a $3.5-million transformation over the past 18 months, giving it a new lease on life while retaining its authentic local-pub charm. In its 154-year history, The Boundary has only had three different owners and current owner Colin Macleod from Oz Pub Group has vowed to keep its history alive – he even sought approval from the Pitt family, who ran the pub for 9o years. The revitalised The Boundary will be a multi-purpose destination offering dining, events and entertainment, taking inspiration from Sydney venues such as The Grounds of Alexandria and Coogee Pavilion. It will feature West End’s only rooftop bar, a laneway, bars, live music, a pizzeria, a gaming room, event spaces and a courtyard offering grazing plates. But it hasn’t been a case of ‘out with the old’ – The Boundary’s original 1928 steel beams have been brought back to life alongside a number of other historic features, including the famous hand-painted XXXX sign from the old drive through. Newstead is about to welcome a new resident and, despite her name, she promises to bring good vibes. Grumpy Madam is currently underway on Evelyn Street, due to open in early January next year. The cafe is the first project for owner Gareth Cochrane, who has long dreamed of opening his own venue. Grumpy Madam will focus on wholefoods and clean dishes, with a simple menu of roughly 12 items across breakfast and lunch served alongside Blackboard Coffee. Gareth promises you won’t find the likes of eggs benedict and smashed avocado on the menu – instead think grilled fish with 12-hour slow-roasted tomato with goats curd and herb and lemon oil.
Alfred & Constance
In case you missed it – last Friday we broke the news that Alfred & Constance had officially changed hands from receivers to hospitality veterans RMS Group. The group (behind Brisbane venues such as George on George, The Pavilion Bar and most recently Hellcat Maggie) will be gradually updating the venue over the next 12 months, but as of last week Alfred & Constance is officially back open six nights a week. The venue has been given a little spruce up and a new menu, including a rotating list of specials. Two-for-one pizzas will be on offer for Tight-arse Tuesdays, 1 kg of wings and a bucket of Coronas for $20 on Wing It Wednesdays, $15 steaks on Thursdays, $10 share boards from 4:00 pm on Fridays, charcuterie and a cocktail for $20 on Saturdays, plus the Mates Rates lunch of a cheeseburger and a beer for $15 every day. Corbett & Claude and Comuna Cantina
Back in May, we announced a huge laneway dining precinct was planned for Everton Plaza, including the likes of 5 Boroughs , Stellarossa and Brisbane City favourites Corbett & Claude and Comuna Cantina . We promised to keep you in the loop and, as works have started to ramp up, more details have been revealed on Corbett & Claude and Comuna Cantina. The first to open will be Corbett & Claude in April on the ground floor, which will spill out to the laneway and an outdoor dining area at the rear. The eatery’s resident coffee spot Mr. Claude will be incorporated into the venue’s central bar and kitchen, where diners and drinkers can perch on a stool and watch their order being prepared. Comuna Cantina will open next door in June and the end of 2019 will see a laid-back, European summer-inspired rooftop bar open above Corbett & Claude. Both Corbett & Claude and Comuna Cantina have recently launched new menus (which will carry over to Everton Plaza), with Corbett & Claude adding at 20-page drink menu, doubling its pasta selection and adding some new mains, and Comuna Cantina doubling its cocktail list and adding quesadillas to the menu for the first time.
