Pavement Whispers: Volume 197 November 6

From whispers of an ice-cream degustation to new food markets, The Weekend Edition is always on the search for the latest news in Brisbane, dedicated to ensuring its readers are in the know. When we put our ears to the pavement this week, this is what we found out …

Josue Lopez at the Bromley Room #2
After his departure from GOMA Restaurant just over a year ago, chef Josue Lopez is back to responding to art with food. This time it’s through a series of four pop-up dinners at West Village’s new Bromley Room #2, housed inside the iconic Peters Ice Cream Factory building. Given the site’s history, Josue will be showcasing ice-cream through each seven-course degustation, experimenting with interesting flavour combinations from his childhood. Josue will continue his commitment to native and unusual ingredients throughout the degustation – there will be a dish called Exploration with camel sirloin, and new-season lilly pilly will feature through both savoury and sweet ice-cream dishes, such as the scallop and avocado ice-cream taco, and the rainforest sundae with Daintree vanilla. Each intimate dinner will only have 30 tickets available – head to our Event Guide for details.

BITE Markets
Brisbane’s northside will welcome a new food-oriented market early next year, taking over a space on Nolan Drive in Morayfield. BITE Markets at North Harbour will celebrate the produce of the Moreton Bay region, with almost 60 Southeast Queensland flavour makers, food creators and artisans presented across a number of customised shipping containers. In addition to food, the markets will also feature a number of creative stalls and on-site entertainment, sprawling across 5000 sqm of landscaped areas and green space. The market, accessible via Exit 150 off the Bruce Highway, is set to open in February 2019 every Friday and Saturday from 4:00–10:00 pm, and will have dedicated parking for more than 600 vehicles. BITE Markets is currently calling out for stallholders – head to the website for details.

Brisbane City Markets
More market news – after nine years under the operation of Jan Powers Farmers Markets, the Wednesday markets in Reddacliff Place is changing management. Goodwill Projects – the brains behind Carseldine, Milton, Nundah, Kuraby and the Early Bird and Breakfast Markets – will be taking over the markets as of early next year, with the first market taking place the Wednesday after Australia Day. The markets will be renamed Brisbane City Markets and founder Mark Power (no relation to Jan) says that Goodwill Projects will continue the incredible environment created by Jan and Sammy Power and their team, and take it to the next level. A number of current popular stallholders will remain at Brisbane City Markets, as well as a new, wider selection of seasonal and local farmers and specialty stores, alongside creative art and music. Jan Powers Farmers Markets will continue at Powerhouse, Manly and Mitchelton as normal.

Betty’s Burgers Indooroopilly
Much-loved burger joint Betty’s Burgers has announced its third Brisbane store, due to open in mid-December just in time for Christmas. After opening successful eateries in Newstead and Chermside last year, Betty’s has set its sights on Indooroopilly Shopping Centre, opening in the site formerly occupied by Corbett & Claude. Betty’s Burgers Indooroopilly will serve up the same menu as its original Noosa restaurant, including its mouth-watering selection of burgers, sides and iced concretes. We’ve heard through the grapevine that there will be some exciting opening offers – stay tuned for details.
