Pavement Whispers: Volume 143 October 10

From whispers of grilled-cheese delights to midnight dining clubs, The Weekend Edition is always on the search for the latest news in Brisbane, dedicated to ensuring its readers are in the know. When we put our ears to the pavement this week, this is what we found out …

Southbeach Social
Just in time for summer (who are we kidding, it’s basically been summer all year) South Bank has welcomed a breezy newcomer, Southbeach Social. The beach shack-inspired venue has quietly opened its ground floor, ahead of the official opening of the entire space at the end of this month. From the brain of hospitality veteran Bevan Bickle, Southbeach Social is focused around casual dining and laid-back drinks – pretty ideal considering its location overlooking Streets Beach and the Brisbane River. Shared plates, rotisserie meats and succulent burgers are on the menu, alongside frosty beers on tap and beach-inspired cocktails. We’ll have full details once Southbeach Social officially launches!

Midnight Dining Club
Looks like sleepy old Brisbane does have a penchant for late-night dining. After two successful weeks at Fortitude Valley’s new pop-up space Alf’s Place, the Midnight Dining Club has been extended for another weekend. The concept comes from MasterChef alumni Danielle Dixon (who has also worked in some of the country’s top kitchens including Quay and Rockpool) and is exactly as it sounds – late-night eats served from 10:00 pm to 2:30 am. The constantly changing menu has been graced with the likes of croque madames and peanut butter and jelly ice-cream sandwiches, and also includes a list of ‘pantry’ ingredients, which diners can select from and ask the chefs to create one of their favourite late-night cravings. The final two nights are this Friday October 13 and Saturday October 14 – we recommend preparing with an afternoon nap.

Ben’s Burgers West End
It’s a sad day for bun lovers – favourite Ben’s Burgers has announced it will be closing its West End restaurant from lunchtime this Sunday October 15. The laid-back hangout opened almost two years ago as The Bleachers on Boundary Street, transforming into Ben’s Burgers West End in November last year. It’s been a wild and fun ride for brothers Ben and Nick Chiu, but the decision comes with a look to focus their energy on exciting future endeavours – we can’t be sad about that. Also there’s no need to fret, because you can still get your beloved burgs at Ben’s Fortitude Valley location. Phew!

Melt Brothers Garden City
Turns out it is easy being cheesy – especially when the grilled cheese is half price! To celebrate the official opening of its Westfield Garden City store this Saturday October 14, Melt Brothers is offering 50 percent off all of its grilled cheese sandwiches when purchased with tater tots and a drink. Yep – everything from the classic triple-cheese The Mouse Trap through to The BFC loaded with buttermilk fried chicken, slaw, buffalo sauce and aged cheddar will be half price – you just need to flash your socials to show that you’re following Melt Brothers to get the goods. The store opening will also see the launch of Melt Brothers delivering to the southside through UberEATSDeliveroo and Foodora.

Williams-Sonoma Pop-up
You all went a little crazy when we announced the opening of Pottery Barn and west elm two years ago, and now there’s a new reason to squeal with delight – sibling brand Williams-Sonoma is launching its first-ever pop-up today. Located inside Pottery Barn on Wandoo street, the pop-up will feature a tight edit of some of the brand’s most iconic products, curated especially for the Brisbane community. Williams-Sonoma focuses specifically on the kitchen, so you can expect to find a selection of cookware and tools, appliances, bakeware and more. The pop-up will also have stock of the brand’s famous Peppermint Bark (yum!) and shoppers will have the chance to win a $1000 Williams-Sonoma gift card when they sign up in store. Get the full details in our Event Guide.
