Pavement Whispers: Volume 281 October 27

From news of a new inner-city coffee bar from Industry Beans to an overwater cocktail bar, The Weekend Edition is always on the search for the latest food news in Brisbane, dedicated to ensuring its readers are in the know (while also supporting our local hospitality industry). When we put our ears to the pavement this week, this is what we found out …

Industry Beans Adelaide St.
Here is some big news for inner-city caffeine sippers – beloved specialty coffee roaster Industry Beans is opening a new location on Adelaide Street in November. The expansion comes a year on from the arrival of the Melbourne-born operation’s 150-seat cafe and coffee roastery in Newstead, which wasted no time in becoming a popular institution for Brisbane’s brunch crowd. The sibling venue takes some cues from Industry Beans’ CBD locations in Sydney and Melbourne, with a streamlined service model facilitating peak-hour grab-and-go rushes. Melbourne-based architects March Studio have conceptualised Industry Beans Adelaide St.’s responsive design, with a large white coffee bar (big enough to seat ten and equipped with state-of-the-art coffee equipment) and detailed panelling on the walls and ceiling helping to create a crisp and modern feel. The coffee spot will be serving Industry Beans’ Newstead blend and a seasonal blend for milk-based espresso coffees, as well as rotating single origins for both espresso and filter sips. Fans of more elaborate beverages are encouraged to get acquainted with Industry Beans’ cold-brew drinks range, which includes the Bubble Coffee (cold-brew coffee, coffee-soaked tapioca pearls and regular milk or a mixture of vegan condensed and oat milk) and the Fitzroy Iced (Fitzroy Street cold brew, wattleseed, organic panela and milk of choice). In addition to the brew, Industry Beans Adelaide St. will stock a curated range of pastries and retail goodies – think beans, equipment, packaged treats and ready-to-drink cold-brew cans. Enhancing the Adelaide St. customer experience will be the Industry Beans app, which will allow regulars to order ahead and give access to exclusive offers – every new user will enjoy their first coffee on the house! Industry Beans Adelaide St. will open next month and will operate seven days a week, perfect for the caffeine-deprived weekend shopping crowd. Stay tuned for a closer look on The Weekend Edition soon.

Maude
Coorparoo locals have a new neighbour moving in this weekend – and she goes by the name of Maude. The cafe has taken over the space previously occupied by Avé Cucina & Coffee Bar on Eva Street, with local husband-and-wife duo Brandon and Caity Hemmings at the helm. The couple has been working in the area for almost a decade and seeks to add to Coorparoo’s community with personalised service, a family-friendly atmosphere and delicious quality food. Maude was inspired by Brandon and Caity’s love of classic flavours, so you can expect to find plenty on the menu, done in a signature Maude style using locally sourced produce. Opening menu highlights include the Smoked-salmon Nourish Bowl and Maude’s version of a croque madame, served alongside Wolff Coffee Roasters coffee. Maude is set to open this Saturday October 31 and will operate seven days for breakfast and lunch from 6:00 am to 4:00 pm. We’ll have a closer look for you next week!

Black Hops Brewing buys Semi-Pro Brewing Co.
There’s been some movement in the local craft-beer scene, with news that the team at beloved East Brisbane brewery Semi-Pro has sold the business to the alchemists at Burleigh Heads-based Black Hops Brewery. After two years building a loyal following at its warm and welcoming home on Manilla Street, the Semi-Pro team has sold the production facility and taproom to Black Hops, which will utilise the space as the headquarters for its Brisbane operations moving forward. Semi-Pro Brewing owner, founder and brewer Mick Guy will remain as the site head brewer for Black Hops Brisbane, while co-owners Siena Perry and Shaun Stubley will also remain involved, meaning the same familiar faces will still be the ones dispensing the frothy goodness. The taproom closed on Monday for a quick refurbishment, and will reopen soon under the Black Hops banner.

The Prince Consort
As we creep closer to the end of the month, we also get tantalisingly close to the arrival of The Prince Consort – Fortitude Valley’s anticipated nightlife showstopper. The venue – well, it’s more like a collection of eight venues in one – is set to open on Friday October 30 with a big Halloween spectacular transforming the building’s three levels into a haunted mansion. While we can’t wait to get into the ghoulish fun a Halloween party entails, we’re also excited by the news that culinary hotshot Jack Powlay has been appointed The Prince Consort’s head chef. After a heralded stint as sous chef at Pottsville restaurant Pipit under Ben Devlin and time working with Ben Williamson at Gerard’s Bistro and Ben O’Donoghue at Billykart Kitchen West End, Jack is now in charge of The Prince Consort’s menu design and execution, which includes contemporary Mexican eats at 400 Rabbits Cantina, La La Land’s shared tapas plates and The Prince Consort’s own gastro-pub-inspired offering.

Vegan Foodie Trail at UPSTAIRS at Toombul
To celebrate World Vegan Day on Sunday November 1, eight restaurants at UPSTAIRS at Toombul will join forces to send hungry folk on a jam-packed vegan foodie trail. Mouth-watering eats include a smoked beetroot Reuben sandwich from Archie Brothers Cirque Electriq, a bounty of plant-based sliders at Hello Harry and vegan fried noodles with vegetables and deep-fried tofu at Jackpot Dining. The plant-based goodness continues with vegetarian dumplings from Little Red Dumpling, a green curry from Phat Elephant and polenta fries and pizza from Il Gancio. The best part? All of the eats are $5 or less! If this tastebud-tempting trail sounds like it’s right up your alley, then head to UPSTAIRS at Toombul this Sunday to take advantage of these delicious deals.

Will & Flow
In case you missed the news last week, Treasury Brisbane has announced it will open its first bespoke off-property venue next month, sitting within the transformational Queen’s Wharf Brisbane precinct. Overwater bar Will & Flow is a custom-designed waterfront locale perched over the riverbank between the QUT Gardens Point ferry terminal and the entrance to the Goodwill Bridge. The venue’s breezy design will celebrate Brisbane’s cracking weather, with indoor and outdoor seating available boasting panoramic river views across to South Bank and the Cultural Centre. The venue will cater to a variety of clientele, from those seeking a riverside coffee in the morning to the post-work cocktail set – plus private events! Will & Flow is due to open in November – keep an eye on The Weekend Edition for full details in the coming weeks!
