Pavement Whispers: Volume 142 October 3

From whispers of cheese-pastry giants to late-night dessert bars, The Weekend Edition is always on the search for the latest news in Brisbane, dedicated to ensuring its readers are in the know. When we put our ears to the pavement this week, this is what we found out …

Hokkaido Baked Cheese Tart
Let those words sink in. Baked. Cheese. Tart. We’ve been dreaming of these babies ever since our friends on the Gold Coast wrote of the arrival of Hokkaido Baked Cheese Tart (HBCT) at Pacific Fair back in July. Now finally the wait is over – the pastry delights are coming to Brisbane with not one, but two venues. The first Hokkaido Baked Cheese Tart store is set to open in The Myer Centre in late October, closely followed by a Westfield Garden City store opening in early November. We know what you’re thinking – what exactly is a baked cheese tart? Allow us to enlighten you. Imagine a crunchy shortcrust pastry contrasted by a fluffy, creamy filling, famous for its richness, moreish sweet/savoury taste and tantalising cheesy aroma. The tarts come in original cheese and chocolate flavours, with a new blueberry flavour to be launched across all stores from this Friday October 6. We’ll have more details soon!

Tocco Italiano Teneriffe
One year after opening authentic Italian eatery Tocco Italiano in Chelmer, owner Arturo Buonocore has announced a second location on Teneriffe’s Florence Street. Good food and wine are in Arturo’s blood – his family has owned restaurants, cafes, wine bars and more on the Amalfi Coast since 1935 – so it’s no surprise that he is excited to further share his love of Italian food with the people of Brisbane. Tocco Italiano Teneriffe will have a more refined offering than its rustic Italian sibling, showcasing the skills of its one Michelin-starred chef, alongside a number of Chelmer favourites and traditional woodfired pizzas. The restaurant is set to open in the coming months, more details soon.

Lick! Ice Cream Morningside
Dessert lovers, brace yourselves. Lick! Ice Cream is opening a second dessert bar! After almost two successful years scooping some of Brisbane’s best frozen desserts in Graceville, Lick! is bringing its sweet treats to Morningside. Much like its westside counterpart, the Wynnum Road dessert bar will serve up a plethora of Lick!’s ice-cream flavours and deliciously decadent desserts including its famous Doffles – that’s a doughnut and waffle hybrid, in case you haven’t tried it. Ice-cream sandwiches, banana splits, shakes and more will feature on the menu, as well as some new yet-to-be-revealed items. The Morningside shop will have the same hours as Graceville too, meaning you can sate your sweet cravings late into the evening, with the store opening until 9:30 pm Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday, and 11:30 pm Friday and Saturday nights. There’s also talks of localised delivery, perfect for those summer days when you can’t possibly leave your air-con. Lick! Morningside is due to open early November – we’ll keep you posted.

Arc + Family James Street
Purveyor of pretty pots Arc + Family is coming to James Street! Husband and wife duo Benjamin and Ashleigh Keily are bringing their much-loved handmade collection to the tree-lined strip, taking over the old general store on the corner of Harcourt Street. The building has been given a fresh lick of blush-pink paint and a mint-green door to match Arc + Family’s Oxford Street store, and fit-out is underway. Due to open in the coming weeks, the store will house a vast collection of Arc’s ready-made pots, as well as plant stands, candles, terrariums and homewares. The space will be shared with Gold Coast local A Boy Named Aaron, showcasing a selection of his hand-crafted curios. With the new larger location, Arc + Family has big plans for the space, including transforming the backyard into a cactus garden early next year, with the possible addition of a coffee spot and event space. Lovers of the Oxford Street store will be glad to hear it’s not going anywhere, however it will play host to a collaborative pop-up in the next few weeks.
