Good Food Guide 2019 Awards
Last night saw 800 of the biggest names in the Australian hospitality industry converge in Melbourne for the Good Food Guide 2019 Awards. This is the second year the guide has been combined into one national publication, featuring reviews of more than 500 restaurants across the country. The prestigious Vittoria Coffee Restaurant of the Year award this year went to Adelaide’s Restaurant Orana, while renowned chef Peter Gilmore of Sydney’s newly revitalised Quay took out Citi Chef of the Year. Brisbane represented in the national awards too, with Otto taking out Wine List of the Year thanks to the careful curation of sommelier Alan Hunter. As for hats, Queensland’s Aria, Stokehouse Q and Wasabi maintained two hats, with Otto gaining a hat this year to join them. Seventeen Queensland restaurants were awarded (or maintained) one hat, including Brisbane’s Gauge, e’cco bistro, 1889 Enoteca and Gerard’s Bistro. The Old Seven
Camp Hill will soon be welcoming a new cafe and wine bar, when The Old Seven opens its doors on Old Cleveland Road. The venue comes from local husband-and-wife duo Matt and Nellie Lucas, who are drawing on their shared passion for wine, food, travel and entertaining, and Matt’s 20-plus years’ experience in the liquor industry. The Old Seven takes its inspiration from the petite cafe-cum-wine bars of France, serving up cheese and charcuterie boards, bite-size tartines and decadent cheesy jaffles, as well as a number of vegan options. Coffee will accompany the menu by day, followed by a hand-selected wine list as the sun sets. The Old Seven is due to open in mid-November – we’ll have more details for you soon.
Six Feet Under Newstead
Without coffee, we may as well be six feet under – at least that’s how we feel until we get that sweet caffeine hit. On its way to bring you back to life is new cafe Six Feet Under Newstead, due to open this month in the space formerly occupied by Black Milk Clothing on Masters Street. The team is currently working away on the fit-out, preserving the original charm of the expansive 370-sqm basement space, opening it right up to feature high ceilings and polished concrete floors highlighted by timber, steel and black accents. Six Feet Under will serve a simple-yet-unique menu for breakfast and lunch, with the space converting into a 150-seat function venue by night. The Rivershed and The Houses at Howard Smith Wharves
Exciting news is coming in thick and fast as the opening of the hotly anticipated Howard Smith Wharves draws closer, with this week revealing the precinct’s range of flexible event spaces. Joining the previously announced Howard’s Hall are two new major spots to cater to all manner of functions and parties – crowning jewel The Rivershed and cliffside beauty The Houses. The Rivershed is a former heritage wharf building that has been carefully restored by local design studio Fellow Interiors, offering a whopping 630 standing capacity that can be reconfigured into smaller nooks as desired. The Houses offers a more intimate approach, encompassing four separate boutique spaces ideal for smaller events. Executive Chef Steve Forrester will be helming the kitchen for events, utilising fresh seasonal produce to create bright cuisine to whatever scale required. Dendy n Chill at Coorparoo Square
Forget the memes about Netflix and chill – Coorparoo Square and Dendy Cinemas have teamed up to make your next date night a total delight with a little bit of Dendy n Chill action. For two weeks in October, Coorparoo Square will be offering delicious dining experiences in conjunction with all Dendy movie tickets purchased, encouraging people to get off the couch and head out for some quality hang time. To receive one complimentary $50 dining voucher to redeem at the precinct’s participating food retailers, all you have to do is purchase two full-priced movie tickets from Dendy Coorparoo and let the cinema staff know you are down to ‘Dendy n Chill’. The promotion will be running on weekdays from October 15–19 and again from October 22–26 – just don’t forget to utter the magic words at the box office.
