Pavement Whispers: Volume 189 September 11

From whispers of cafes and cellar doors to specialty coffee outposts, The Weekend Edition is always on the search for the latest news in Brisbane, dedicated to ensuring its readers are in the know. When we put our ears to the pavement this week, this is what we found out …

Carl’s
A few months back, Brisbane’s wine scene was shaken up by the news of the arrival of our first inner-city micro-winery. While details on the anticipated opening of City Winery are being kept secret, owners Adam Penberthy and Dave Cush are already splashing their wines about at their new cellar-door-meets-cafe called Carl’s. Named after Brisbane viticulture pioneer Carl Gerler, the venue quietly opened last week on Wyandra Street in Teneriffe. This cafe-come-wine-bar is offering a concise menu (overseen by chef Chris Siktars) of breakfast bites in the morning – think truffle honey and whipped ricotta on sourdough from Danny’s Bread – followed on by charcuterie, cheese and conservas in the evening. Diners will also be able to sample whites, reds and rosés by the glass or bottle along with their snacks, while Carl’s will also be hosting wine tastings of top-notch Gerler drops. We’ll have a closer look on The Weekend Edition soon!

Newports
Coffee cravers of South Brisbane take note – a new specialty coffee outpost is set to spring up in your hood next Monday. Newports is the name of the fresh arrival, which has taken over the old Two Trees space on Merivale Street. With a focus on craft coffee from Single O and a selection of eats in the form of toasties, croissants, pastries and a rotating selection of salads, Newports is shaping up to be a handy nook for those after the essentials. Patrons are welcome to linger, with the tricked-up space from the team at Woodsters adjusted to seat 15, while also boasting a bit more natural light through newly installed lift-up windows. Keep your eyes peeled for more details next week.

Tanqueray Terrace at Customs House
The weather is heating up, so we’re already creating a list of summer party spots to take advantage of the killer weather. Following hot on the heels of the opening of its signature restaurant Patina, Customs House has announced a botanical-infused arrival in the form of Tanqueray Terrace at Customs House – launching on Thursday September 20. The spring-inspired pop-up bar will be serving four different Tanqueray gins, available in cocktails or mixed with a selection of Fever Tree tonics and a citrus pairing. Once you’ve got your drink, you are free to select your own garnish from an on-site herb garden. Bar snacks will also be available, with duck confit croquettes, smoked trout and sweetcorn fritters, Moreton Bay bug buns, cheese platters and desserts available.

The New Black After Dark
It’s been a busy few months for Sam Holman – co-owner of Spring Hill’s Two Black Birds and Bakery Lane’s The New Black. Since the latter venue’s opening in March, Sam and his team have been working towards taking the leap to night trading. Finally, the Fortitude Valley-venue is opening after dark, introducing a new experimental tapas and wine menu on Friday and Saturday nights. The New Black kicked off the nights last Friday, offering up quirky cocktails such as the Black Bloody Mary made with activated charcoal, spiked juices from a new gin and juice bar, and creative bites including cheeseburger spring rolls, miso eggplant with puffed grains and deep-fried enoki mushrooms. You can sample the intriguing fare on Fridays and Saturdays after 5:00 pm.

Let Minnow Cafe + Bar
It’s hard to believe it’s been three years since Let Minnow opened its doors in Clayfield, but we guess time flies when enjoying quality cafe fare! To celebrate its third rotation around the sun, the Let Minnow team is unveiling a stellar new addition in the form of a bar. Boasting a distinctive Spanish lean, the Let Minnow Cafe + Bar will be serving up a biodynamic and organic-wine selection from Spain and Australia, as well as pintxos-style snacks and small, medium and large share plates. Let Minnow Cafe + Bar will be extending its hours to 9:00 pm from Thursday to Saturday.
