Pavement Whispers: Volume 140 September 19

From whispers of Taco Bell's Australian arrival to a new pop-up garden restaurant, The Weekend Edition is always on the search for the latest news in Brisbane, dedicated to ensuring its readers are in the know. When we put our ears to the pavement this week, this is what we found out …

Edward Specialty Coffee
Brisbane City is about to get a new sleek spot for caffeine hits when Edward Specialty Coffee opens its doors on the corner of ANZAC Square Arcade. As an exclusive for Queensland, the coffee shop will be pouring boutique Sydney-based White Horse Coffee, with owner Abhi Gupta having spent several years working with the roaster before making the move to Brisbane. Alongside cups of joy, Edward Specialty Coffee will offer a selection of delectable pastries from Danny’s Bread and gluten-free, dairy-free and vegan treats from My Plate. The fit-out on the shop has commenced (with inspiration being drawn from the arcade’s heritage-listed architecture) and you can expect to catch the alluring aroma of coffee wafting from the Edward Street location come mid-October.

King Street’s Spring Garden
Bowen Hills’ ever-growing King Street is ready to celebrate spring, announcing the launch of its Spring Garden on Friday October 6. The pop-up garden will allow groups of two to 12 to select from their choice of three different banquet offerings, served in a lush green alfresco setting with a spring cocktail on arrival. The banquets range from $45 to $69 per person (including the welcome drink), with diners set to indulge in the likes of woodfired pizzas, risotto and dessert from Il Verde, dumplings, chicken curry, sweet soy pork belly and dessert from Fat Dumpling, and shared charcuterie boards and slow-roasted lamb shoulder or roasted salmon fillet from The George. King Street’s Spring Garden will pop-up on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings until November 25, with two-hour seatings at 5:30 pm and 8:00 pm. For full details and information on how to book, head to our Event Guide.

Taco Bell Australia
The rumours are true – Taco Bell, the world’s largest Mexican-inspired chain, is soon to have another shot at the Australian market. The fast-food chain has had a couple of unsuccessful forays into the Sydney market over the years, but is set to hit our shores again with a flagship store in Brisbane. Taco Bell has confirmed the location to be in Annerley, at the old Sizzler site, but an exact opening date is yet to be announced. The chain is renowned for its outrageous Cali-Mex creations – standby for the release of the Australian menu in the coming weeks.

The Caviar Degustation
Fancy yourself a caviar aficionado? Then you had best get yourself to Bacchus this October. The South Brisbane restaurant is launching its three-week The Caviar Degustation from Wednesday October 4, featuring nine courses showcasing the coveted delicacy. Celebrated head chef Massimo Speroni has carefully crafted the menu, which includes a wide variety of caviar from all over the world. Diners can expect courses such as the blini with sour cream and Yasa premium Siberian Oscietra caviar from Abu Dhabi, and ravioli with parsley, gazpacho and hand-milked salmon caviar from the Yarra Valley. The Caviar Degustation can be wine matched or paired with the ultimate accompaniment, continuous ‘R’ de Ruinart champagne. Head to our Event Guide for ticketing and more information.

Sono Brisbane City
After more than 20 years in Tattersall’s Arcade, Sono City has temporarily closed its doors to make way for a brand-new restaurant in Brisbane City. Due to open in mid-2018, the new Sono will stay true to the renowned restaurant’s traditional Japanese cuisine but offer a fresh modern aesthetic and expand on the institution’s current offering. While the Brisbane City location is closed, its sister restaurant Sono Portside will remain open, adding its chefs and the most popular dishes from The City to the kitchen and menu. We’ll keep you posted on Sono City’s new location next year.
