Pavement Whispers: Volume 138 September 5

From whispers of Brisbane's first mac 'n' cheesery to new adventures for Josue Lopez, The Weekend Edition is always on the search for the latest news in Brisbane, dedicated to ensuring its readers are in the know. When we put our ears to the pavement this week, this is what we found out …

Mac From Way Back
If we could (and if our cholesterol levels would allow it), we’d eat mac ‘n’ cheese almost every day. For the past eight months, Mac From Way Back has been dispensing the cheesy goodness from its mobile food truck, but some recent news has made our hearts skip a beat. Mac From Way Back will be opening up Brisbane’s first mac ‘n’ cheesery in Fortitude Valley in mid-to-late October. Details are still being kept under wraps, but we can confirm that Mac From Way Back will be taking over a kitchen space at an established venue, taking advantage of the larger facility to dish up its range of loaded fries, mac ‘n’ cheese burgers, and cheesy bowls. Fans can expect some new flavours, including some overflowing mac ‘n’ cheese bowls with chilli chorizo and truffle mushroom. We’ll have more details as they come to light, but one thing’s for sure – our diet will never be the same.

Sundays Cafe
When we think of Rocklea, we typically think of farmers markets. Though a visit to the Rocklea Markets is a staple of our weekend itinerary, the suburb’s reputation will soon get a new wrinkle when Sundays Cafe opens to the public in two months’ time. The latest venture from the hospitality heroes at The Venzin Group (Pawpaw, Piggy Back, Pawpaw Asian Kitchen) will take the shape of a quick-service venue for those on the move. Sundays Cafe will specialise in coffee, smoothies and bowls, as well as some signature dishes for fans of Pawpaw’s style (we’re loving the sound of the new massaman burger). In addition to the menu items, expect a big cabinet full to bursting point with healthy and meaty sandwiches and a host of vegan and gluten-free bites. In other news, we hear that Pawpaw Asian Kitchen in Balmoral will open at the end of the month – stay tuned for a closer look!

Emporium Hotels Dining
After five years as executive chef at GOMA Restaurant, Josue Lopez is embarking on a new adventure, announced as executive chef for Emporium Hotels. During his time at GOMA Josue received much acclaim, securing two hats in the Brisbane Times 2016 and 2017 Good Food Guides and Citi Chef of the Year in 2016, and now the talented chef says he is ready to take his cuisine to the next level. As of November 1, Josue will take on the role with Anthony John Group’s Emporium Hotels based at the new flagship hotel in South Bank, which is due to open in mid-2018. He will direct all of the hotel’s dining options, showcasing the breadth of his talents in the yet-t0-be-named signature restaurant, as well as the piano bar, rooftop bar, Belle Époque Patisserie (the second for the group), in-suite dining, and conferencing and events. GOMA Restaurant, outlets and events will go on to create the incredible dishes they are well known for, run by the outstanding team that has worked alongside Josue for the last five years. The gallery’s philosophy will continue to be upheld, inspired by the art on display to creatively draw on seasonal local produce.
