Pavement Whispers: Volume 73 May 24

From whispers of a new boutique markets to a new sweet treat and burger joint, The Weekend Edition is always on the search for the latest news in Brisbane, dedicated to ensuring its readers are in the know. When we put our ears to the pavement this week, this is what we found out …

Hello Please
If you’ve wandered down Fish Lane in the past few months, chances are you’ve noticed a vacant shipping container across from Maker, just waiting to be transformed into something fun and exciting. That something is to be Hello Please, a Vietnamese-style street-food eatery and bar set to open in mid June. The brainchild of Maris Cook, former restaurant manager of Pearl Cafe in Woolloongabba, and Dan Ward of The Stables Craft Bar & Kitchen, Hello Please will serve up tasty morsels alongside a curated wine, cocktail and canned beer list for lunch and dinner Tuesday to Sunday, with seating scattered around the outdoor laneway space.

Pressed Juices x nodo donuts
If you haven’t already heard, nodo donuts and Pressed Juices have teamed up to open a joint location in the middle of Brisbane’s CBD. The union of Brisbane’s finest purveyor gluten-free doughnuts and the popular cold-pressed juice company is a match made in heaven and now you can enjoy both at the new shop on Elizabeth Street. Patrons can nibble on nodo’s selection of tasty, baked treats or raw, vegan foods while sipping on a cold juice or specialty coffee.

Bake & Burger
A new sweet treat and burger joint is set to open in Beenleigh this week, when Bake & Burger starts cooking on Wednesday. The venture is the brainchild of Gene Cavalchini and Braidy Hughes who run successful wholesale baked goods supplier Tool Box Chef. The duo are hard at work putting the finishing touches on the space, which will boast a cake cabinet full to the brim with Tool Box’s slices, brownies and cookies while a kitchen will be pumping out a range of six breakfast burgers on weekday mornings and six traditional varieties for dinner of Friday and Saturday nights. Expect options such as 12-hour brisket and pulled pork burgers, topped with the likes of pickled habaneros, sauces and chutneys that have been made in-house. Bake & Burger will also serve a vegan and vegetarian burgers with the menu set to rotate on a monthly basis.

Brisbane Daylight Markets
A new boutique market is set to hit the scene in August, when the Brisbane Daylight Markets take place on the north side. The team behind this venture is currently putting out the call for stallholders to apply – any boutique stalls in the realm of food, fashion, art or design are encouraged to get in touch. Expect the Brisbane Daylight Markets team to announce venue details in the near future. In other market news, the Metre Market held at the Morningside School of Arts is now becoming a monthly event taking place on the last Sunday of each month from Sunday May 29 onwards.

Paper Plate Supper Club
If you work in the CBD and are looking to mix up your lunch routine, you should know that this week King George Square will be taken over by a range of street food traders from 9:00am to 7:00 pm. The Paper Plate Supper Club has collected the likes of Pizzantica, Fiery Deli, Rolls Pho Mi, Zagyoza and many more popular vendors, all of which will be trading until Thursday.

Effervescence
If you love a good drop of bubbly every now and then, this piece of news is for you. A new festival is set to take place at Spicers Hidden Vale in August, celebrating everything champagne. Effervescence will feature tastings and masterclasses hosted by representatives from some of the best champagne houses in the world. Patrons can sign on for a special Champagne Trail, where they can spend an afternoon wandering around Spicers Hidden Vale to four pop-ups representing the main growing regions of champagne – where the terroir of the regions will be explained with a charcuterie accompaniment.
