Smoothies in a cinch – sort your morning mix with help from Persys and Co

Spring is just around the corner and with it comes a whole host of fresh seasonal fruit to devour. To us warm weather means it's smoothie season, but if you don't have the time to pop to the farmer's markets to stock up, or can't spare time to wash, chop and freeze your haul to avoid spoilage, allow us to introduce you to Persys and Co – a brand-new distributor of ready-to-blend smoothie packs chock full of Australian fruit and veg. The brainchild of a Brisbane-based sibling duo is looking to shake up our routines – so if you're eager to make the smoothie process even smoother, have a gander at what these 'whizz' kids (pun intended) are whipping up.

When Phoebe Pershouse moved back to Brisbane in the midst of the pandemic, she found herself living under the same roof with her younger brother Charlie for the first time in 10 years. With all of the extra lockdown time together, the siblings decided to act on an idea they’d tossed around for years. The two wanted to find a way to help folks stay healthy by making it easier to obtain locally grown fruit and veg, and as produce is something of a family business (their father operates Rocklea-based Pershouse Produce, a long-running supplier of top-notch farm-fresh fruit and vegetables), it made sense to take advantage of the quality crops at their fingertips. Phoebe and Charlie decided smoothies were a no-brainer option – simple to make and widely beloved, and could utilise the width and breadth of the country’s bounty. The pair got to work on establishing Persys and Co – a budding delivery service that sources, washes, cuts, freezes, packs and distributes seasonal produce for smoothie lovers to blend and sip without hassle. A period of research and development saw the siblings test roughly 75 ingredient combinations, gauging how various fruits and vegetables mixed and responded to the addition of coconut water and milk substitutes. At the end of July the duo had their debut range of smoothie packs in hand, filled to the brim with nutritious combinations that only require a splash of your preferred liquid and a vigorous blending before consumption.

Persys and Co’s selection of smoothie packs are designed to be fool-proof to whip up while offering maximum flavour without powders or extras. The Pershouse siblings are imbuing each combo with a dash of Australian spirit, reiterating its homegrown roots by naming the six-flavour range after some of the country’s iconic beaches. The Straddie boasts a combination of pre-cut mango, spinach, pineapple, lemon and ginger, whilst handfuls of blueberries, strawberries, raspberries and banana comprise The Noosa. Green smoothie lovers will froth on The Bondi’s mix of spinach, zucchini, green apple, pineapple and mint, while The Palmy’s combo of mango, strawberry and banana makes it a sneakily sound option for a boozy shake up. All of the packs come frozen, which means they can keep for an incredibly long time even when some ingredients drop out of season (Persys and Co will alter combinations based on seasonality). Securing a box of Persys smoothie packs is easy – simply head to the website to order a mixed pack of all six flavours or build your own, then they’ll send and you blend. The packs are delivered across Brisbane’s inner suburbs and come in recycled styrofoam packaging loaded with dry ice, keeping the goodies inside frozen for 18 hours if you can’t be on hand to collect.
