Long gone are the days when the humble doughnut simply came from an American fast-food chain, where dollops of batter were simply dropped into hot oil then dipped in cinnamon sugar. Now the doughnut is a thing of beauty, a prized-possession and an item of deep thought and discussion when it comes to flavours, ingredients and cooking methods.

The characteristic that first comes to mind when looking into the shelves of Plant Based Dough Co. is that of beauty. These babies shine, their vibrant colours and creative flavours make your mouth water. The next best thing about them, proud market stallholder Chris Burling will tell you, is that these sweet goods are vegan. Catering to those with dairy and egg allergies, as well as those who just love great tasting doughnuts, Plant Based Dough Co. has treats that have gone under considerable recipe development.

Each week Plant Based Dough Co. announces the doughnut flavours that it will be taking to the Boundary Street Markets, for the simple reason that the team doesn’t want you to miss out. You can preorder your favourite selection via the Facebook page to ensure you go home happy.

This weekend’s flavours include mint slice, filled with a smooth mint cream and topped with dark chocolate glaze, and it’s sure to be a sellout. Also on offer are passionfruit, s’mores (marshmallow and chocolate), salted-caramel pretzel, cookies and cream, and strawberries and cream. The team at Plant Based Dough Co. has also introduced a gluten-free peanut butter and jelly brownie as well as the ever-popular pecan caramel pie to satisfy sweet vegan cravings.

If you are suitably inspired, head down to Boundary Street Markets early before they sell out.
