Proudly Queensland grown and made, the label translates to ‘Land of Granite’, reflecting the distinctive decomposed granite soils and Italian heritage of the Granite Belt Region. Grapes are sourced from vineyards within the Ballandean district before being transformed by experienced winemaker Peter Wise into a range of Rieslings, Chardonnays, Rosés and more. Back in the 1800s, Brisbane boasted more than 350 acres of grape vines spread across the city, including a 14-acre plot along the Brisbane River where Nundah stands today owned by winegrower Carl Gerler. Fast forward to 2019 and Gerler Wines is reigniting our city’s viticultural history, with winemaker Dave Cush handcrafting artisan, small-batch wines for the supping. Dave sources quality grapes from wherever they grow best around the country to produce a range of wines out of Brisbane’s first inner-city micro-winery, while also distributing them through his cellar-door-meets-cafe, Carl’s. After a successful vintage in 2018, Gerler Wines will be unveiling some interesting new drops in the months ahead. A small winery on Tamborine Mountain in the Gold Coast Hinterland is concocting some very fine nectar of the gods indeed. Witches Falls produces three distinctive ranges of wines: Granite Belt, Wild Ferment and Prophecy, each of which offers a different approach to the various styles and practices in viticulture and winemaking. Grapes are sourced from the high-altitude, cool-climate Granite Belt Region before being de-stemmed, pressed, fermented, matured in oak barrels, filtered and bottled on Tamborine Mountain. These guys had us at “Minimal intervention. Maximum care.” Armed with a noble intention to inject a little humour into the often-stuffy wine industry while producing interesting, affordable wines full of character (captured perfectly by their labels), Konpira Maru is ticking all the boxes. The label’s humble beginnings as two wine industry mates talking shop at their local pub set the cogs in motion for what would soon become a reputable wine brand based across the South Burnett and Granite Belt Regions of Queensland and Kilmore in Victoria, with their own vineyard located above the King Valley. The boys farm the soil themselves and personally bottle every drop, crafting wines without rules or boundaries for the open mind, adventurous palate and thirsty gullet.

La Petite Mort
It’s been a busy few months for Queensland winemaker Andrew Scott, who was named as one of the esteemed Final 12 Winemakers in the 2019 Young Gun of Wine Awards. As the wizard behind Queensland label La Petite Mort, Andrew produces small-batch, experimental wines with minimal intervention from the Bent Road Winery in Ballandean on the western reaches of the Great Dividing Range. The boutique wine producer enjoys full creative licence and promises a unique sensory experience with each glass of his wine.
