Far from amateur – Semi-Pro Brewing Co. turns on the taps at its East Brisbane brewhouse

When a brewing competition catapulted a group of humble home brewers into the Brisbane craft-beer spotlight, their aspirations of joining the ranks of Brisbane’s brewing elite went from pipe dream to steel-tank certainty. Semi-Pro Brewing Co. opened the doors at its bricks-and-mortar operation last week, pouring a range of popular brews honed and refined throughout its gypsy-brewing beginnings.

It was at Brewsvegas three years ago that Mick Guy and a few of his mates first turned their brewing passion into a fully-fledged career path. After scoring second place in a brewing comp with his own rye IPA, Mick started furthering his craft through stints brewing around town out of other established facilities such as 4hearts and Bacchus Brewing Co., crafting brews as Semi-Pro Brewing Co.. While the name pays tribute to Mick’s humble brewing beginnings, his beers quickly earned a rep around town. After a couple of years of steady growth, demand for Semi-Pro kegs outgrew his ability to supply, so Mick decided to make the leap from working as a teacher (while brewing on the side) to brewing full time. After recruiting fellow beer enthusiasts Luke Jappinen, Luke’s wife Mikarla and his own wife Siena Perry into the Semi-Pro family, the team set about looking for the best spot to plant roots and establish their own large-scale operation. After coming across the perfect warehouse home in East Brisbane, Semi-Pro Brewing kicked things into a higher gear, installing four 1000 litre and one 2000-litre brewing systems and a taphouse to showcase the output.

Thanks to Mick’s experience brewing on different systems around town, the large upscale in output was a relatively smooth transition. As of opening, Semi-Pro Brewing Co. is already pouring its core range (and one collaborative Brewsvegas beer), with recipes honed and refined over the past three years. Patrons can blow the froth on the likes of the signature Manilla Street pale ale with its old-style American flavour, the thick and smooth coffee and oatmeal stout, the malty and hoppy Munich-style lager with its notes of stone fruit and the Payday American amber ale, which boasts a five-hop combo and incredible depth of flavour. With a larger capacity for brewing and space to grow, Mick and the team are already looking to experiment with different beer styles, while the spacious warehouse location will be used to host events and art displays from local creatives.

Semi-Pro Brewing Co. is now pouring. For opening hours and location details, pop over to the Stumble Guide.
