Boutique bars – where to quench your (cocktail) thirst after your Shop BNE City spending spree

Sips, snacks and shopping sprees – this is a bang-on description of a dreamy weekend, if you're asking The Weekend Edition team. Luckily for us (and you!), The City's annual weekend-long shopping event Shop BNE City is popping up from September 24–26 and is bringing with it some killer discounts. So that you can have a well-deserved break from bargain hunting during the much-anticipated weekend, we have rounded up some of our favourite spots in The City to throw back a cocktail (or two) – you're going to need to rehydrate after all that shopping!

The Chandon Garden
Tipples, tapas and top-notch vibes is exactly what you’ll get in spades at The Chandon Garden, a refreshing pop-up oasis happening during Shop BNE City. Customers are invited to drop in between shopping from Friday September 24 to Sunday September 26 to get a taste of the new Chandon Garden Spritz, a refreshing mix of sparkling wine and natural extracts from orange peels. Keen to soak up the elegant atmosphere of The Chandon Garden? The breezy hub will be located outside Jimmy’s on the Mall, opposite Zara during Shop BNE City. Head here to learn more.

Alba Bar & Deli
If you’re a long-time reader of The Weekend Edition, you know that we are regular visitors of Alba Bar & Deli. The Burnett Lane drinking den is a welcome reprieve from the bustling city streets after a spot of shopping and also boasts a killer cocktail and snack menu to boot. We suggest tucking in to some house marinated olives, a serving of the fried bacalao with piquillo mayo and to quench your thirst, a Negroni Sbagliato (Campari, sweet vermouth and sparkling wine) or the ever-decadent Sweet Harlem (oloroso caramel, Woodford Reserve, sweet vermouth and toffee).

Super Whatnot
For those unfamiliar with this laneway gem, Super Whatnot specialises in good beer, interesting wines and creative cocktails – and it’s also a primo place to put your feet up after strolling Queen Street Mall for a good couple of hours. With flavoursome Central and South American-inspired nosh like beer-battered fish tacos, zucchini quesadillas and scallop ceviche gracing the menu, a well-crafted cocktail is called for to wash it all down. We suggest the Fernet & Cola (Fernet-Branca, Southern Comfort Black, peach, orange, lemon and Jarritos) or the Cuban Jungle (Bacardi Ocho 8, Aperol, pineapple, lime and sugar cane).

City Winery Edward Street
Originally meant to only pop up for a six-month stint, City Winery’s Edward Street cellar door is staying for longer and it’s luring in city dwellers with the promise of top-notch grape juice, cheese and a guaranteed good time. After stepping inside, you’ll be greeted with racks of bottles – think riesling, grüner veltliner, grenache and pinot noir concoctions – that can be enjoyed in-store or purchased to take away. If you have worked up an appetite whilst flicking through the racks, you can graze on a selection of cheeses and charcuterie while you imbibe your drop of choice.

Stanton Bar
The perfect place to people watch (or more specifically, shopper watch), lofty inner-city bar, cafe and restaurant Stanton is found inside QueensPlaza – talk about convenience! After you’ve shopped until you’ve dropped, perch at Stanton Bar and indulge in mouth-watering tapas like wild Mooloolaba scallops served with a truffle-scented cauliflower puree and caper-dill butter, freshly shucked oysters with pink-grapefruit caviar, and crispy strips of buttermilk chicken lightly drizzled with a chipotle sauce. To wet your whistle, choose between refreshing cocktails like whisky sours, mojitos and negronis, or opt for a crisp glass of Veuve Clicquot.
