Cut us off a piece of that – Smokey Moo brings barbecue to East Brisbane

In no particular order, our top-five favourite food smells goes thusly – garlic and butter sizzling in a pan, a rosemary-laden roast, a cake baking away in the oven, a freshly brewed batch of coffee and a smoky wood-fired barbecue. If that last one is a particular favourite of yours, then we’d like to introduce you to Smokey Moo. This brand-new barbecue hotspot is carving up some of the most moreish morsels and low-and-slow cooked meat you’re likely to find, so make like a cow and ‘moove’ your caboose to get your fix.

Vegetarians beware – there’s nought for herbivores to be found here. This piece is for carnivores only. Sorry. If you’re still reading, we’ll assume you’re here because you heard that there’s a new player in the Brisbane barbecue scene. You’d be right – it’s called Smokey Moo and it officially fired up its smoker in East Brisbane this week. Owned and operated by chef and barbecue lover Shalom Bitton (Butcher’s Kitchen, Moo Moo) and his wife Wensley, Smokey Moo is the perfect no-fuss outlet for those that go ballistic over beef and rave about ribs daily. The nook can be spotted just off Lytton Road, boasting an imported smoker and a carving bench where you can see you choice of meat fall delicately, slice by slice.

Smokey Moo’s menu is concise and straightforward, but packs plenty of captivating flavour. Shalom sources his pick of Queensland meat, and lovingly smokes it over an assortment of woods, including black wattle, Australian oak, macadamia wood, pecan chips, cherry oak and ironbark. Patrons can select from a range of stuffed sandwiches, filled with the likes of beef brisket, house-cured pastrami, beef cheeks with capsicum relish, or beef ribs. Those seeking a bigger portion of goodness are advised to try the half-kilo of ribs or the Dirty Dozen, which boasts four carved meats, a three-cheese mix, three sauces and fries. If you like carbs with your carnivorous delights, the Idaho potatoes offer up fried potato skins filled with creamed corn, topped with carved meat of your choice and signature Moo jus. Smokey Moo also offers up a selection of take-home packs and salads to devour in the comfort of your own abode.

We don’t know about you, but we’ve already got meat sweats. Smokey Moo is fired up and cooking now – for contact details and opening hours, click on over to the Stumble Guide.
