Bringin’ the heat – say bienvenidos to the new-look cocktail spot Southbeach

Summer is coming, folks. Soon we'll all be seeking out shady spots to soak up some rays with an icy cocktail in hand. When we want to party in the city when the heat is on, we like to do it near water – and the recently revamped Southbeach looks to be a prime spot for relaxed revelry. Boasting a blend of colourful Miami vibes and chic Palm Springs aesthetics, Southbeach has the look and feel of a breezy tropical beach club. Throw in a range of tantalising bites and specialty cocktails and you got all the makings of a heat-beating oasis.

With a vantage point on Stanley Street Plaza offering views of Streets Beach, the Brisbane River and The City skyline, Southbeach had already scored top marks in the location stakes. With the warmer months approaching, the crew behind the South Bank party spot decided it was time for a seasonal-appropriate overhaul. Southbeach’s multi-tiered layout has been given a fresh makeover, with Kim Burns of architecture and design studio Jumble & Stack taking the lead on the cosmetic pivot. A dash of Palm Springs pastel has been interwoven with the venue’s holiday beach shack leanings, with vivid pops of colour (think sky blue accented by orange and pink) applied liberally across the main bar area and dining spaces. Umbrellas keep the beach-facing patio tables shaded from the sun’s rays, while closer to the kitchen one will find large communal tables and cushy wicker and timber sofas (adorned with tropical-print cushions), allowing groups to congregate among lush foliage.

The new chapter at Southbeach doesn’t stop at the decor – the team has seized the opportunity to revamp the menu, too. Southbeach’s kitchen takes influence from a variety of cuisines for its range of small plates, burgers, mains and treats. Appetite-whetting morsels like duck charcuterie, chermoula buttered prawns, wagyu gyoza, oysters and pea-and-ham croquettes will get the engines of hunger revving, while serves of Korean fried chicken, vegan jerk-spiced pulled ‘pork’ burgers, sambal-marinated pork cutlets, Jerusalem artichoke ravioli, crispy skin salmon and sticky beef ribs will surely satiate. Southbeach’s beverage list is headlined by a range of ‘drinks that make you go mmm’ – we’re talking coconut-lime margaritas, white peach daiquiris and blackberry-and-vanilla mojitos. Spritzes, bellinis, and sangria jugs will also go down a treat when the mercury rises, though blowing the froth off a cold draught beer (both craft and mainstream) will be hard to resist. Party vibes are guaranteed with live music every Friday, Saturday and Sunday, too – so be sure to wear your dancing shoes!

Southbeach is open to the public – you can find menu and contact details in the Stumble Guide.

The Stumble Guide is our comprehensive Brisbane dining guide with more than 2400 places to eat, drink, shop and play.
