Coffee lovers and sneaker heads are two subcultures that boast die-hard fanatics that revel in the discovery of new blends and fresh styles. You’d think there isn’t much of a crossover between the two groups, but turns out there is. Street Lab Specialty Coffee is catering to both fan bases with one of the most unique cafe experiences in Brisbane, offering perfectly poured coffee and stocking some seriously swish sneakers imported from overseas.

Nate Swindale, Ethan Dou and John ‘JB’ Bartlet are the minds behind the Emporium’s stylish new addition Street Lab Specialty Coffee, which is redefining what a cafe can offer to its patrons in terms of service and substance. The trio united over a vision of a cafe where the main focus was making a good cup of coffee without pretence – spliced in with their own particular passions – then set about pooling their collective hospitality knowledge to establish their own roaster and cafe. Set within the Wickham Street side of the precinct, Street Lab Specialty Coffee features a spacious interior that takes full advantage of opposite glass facades, low and raised seating, a comprehensive coffee and service counter and shelves stocked full of sporty kicks.

Street Lab Specialty Coffee places good coffee first and foremost on its list of priorities, and backs up its talk with a sublime offering of single origins and blends roasted at its own roaster operation Scout’s Honour. Depth of taste is a focus here, with contrasting flavours apparent from bean to bean. If you are a flat-white-with-one kid of person or a sucker for some syphon brew, you’ll find something to enjoy here. V60, aeropress and cold-drip coffee is available, as is some intoxicating cascara tea, which is made from coffee cherries. A counter is stocked with an array of brewing apparatus, which will also be utilised in education nights and cupping sessions. The coming weeks will see Street Lab Specialty Coffee add a food offering into the mix, plating up a range of crostini with toppings. Patrons can select their preferred bread, toast it, and pile it high with the likes of avocado, nduja, prosciutto, sardines and more.

As for the sneakers, an entire wall has been dedicated to showcasing a range of imported sneakers and collectibles from specialty suppliers. As of Specialty Lab’s opening the collection consists predominantly of Nike’s Air Jordan series, with a large selection of retro styles on display and newer kicks up for purchase. New styles and brands will be introduced as time goes on, so be sure to check in every time you crave a coffee.
