Teneriffe scores big with heritage hideaway Streetcorner Jimmy

The name James Gibbon would only be familiar to those with a knowledge of Brisbane's early history, but unbeknownst to the greater population, the merchant turned land speculator and politician had a profound impact on the city throughout the 1800s. The man directly responsible for giving Teneriffe its name owned a considerable amount of property, including a particular fondness for corner tenancies. Affectionately known as Streetcorner Jimmy, James’ accumulated land now forms Teneriffe’s heritage centre, and a new bar at the base of the London Woolstore is celebrating the area’s history while breathing some new life into the Vernon Terrace strip.

The details
As a former corporate banker, Darrin Northey knows all about the ins and outs of the rat race – especially how crucial it is to take a break from time to time. Four years ago Darrin and his partner Christina Bergamin broke free of the corporate shackles in favour of a more carefree lifestyle, opening up Element Bar in Coffs Harbour. Once their coastal joint was ticking over nicely, Darrin and Christina cast an eye over Brisbane’s scene with an eye towards opening up a second spot in town. A corner location at the base of the London Woolstore became available (once home to The London Club) and Darrin and Christina saw an opportunity to inject a bit of activity into the leafy promenade. Thus, Streetcorner Jimmy was born – a comfortable bar and eatery that offers a respite from the bustle of the real world.

The space
When it came to the venue itself, Darrin and Christina instantly fell in love with the tenancy’s heritage spirit. Over five months, the team carefully transformed the space into a rustic, urban oasis by bringing out the history of the building while still keeping things fresh. The ceiling and existing paintwork was stripped away to reveal structural beams and the original brick walls, while pressed-metal panels were added to the bar and kitchen pass. One comfy corner boasts new luxurious leather couches bracketed by bookshelves, offset by communal timber tables, candlelit nooks and a spacious outdoor dining space overlooking Vernon Street.

The food and drink
Streetcorner Jimmy’s ethos is to allow guests to be who they want to be, and as such the kitchen and bar menus have been specifically designed to offer flexible options for most tastes. Casual afternoon snacks, sprawling group feasts and intimate connections over nibbles are all dining types that have a place thanks to Streetcorner Jimmy’s menu of eats. The loaded list offers up deliciously rendered comforts such as whisky-smoked barbecue beef short ribs, shredded coconut-chicken tacos, vegan hot dogs, wagyu meatballs, ploughman’s plates, flatbread pizzas, and grilled premium steaks. The choose-your-own-adventure vibes continue at the bar, where craft beer is available on tap and from the fridge alongside both high-end and more modestly priced wines. A big range of spirits filter into the bar’s classic and signature cocktails, helping cement Darrin and Christina’s vision for Streetcorner Jimmy’s adult candy store appeal.
