If you needed proof that the suburban cafe scene is in good health, look no further than Rocklea’s newest resident Sundays Cafe. The Venzin Group (Pawpaw, Pawpaw Asian Kitchen, Piggy Back) has converted what was once an old-school corner takeaway joint across from the Rocklea train station into a swish cafe nook – one that pairs convenience and quick service with the kind of laid-back vibes the Venzin Group eateries are known for. As the space is on the small side, Sundays Cafe employs predominantly outdoor seating, with sturdy timber tables flanking the entry and smaller tables stretching along around the corner. The interior offers splashes of colour, with a vibrant mural along one wall offset by the coffee counter’s vibrant yellow tiling. The colour doesn’t stop there – the menu itself packs a rainbow’s worth of colour across its range of breakfast and lunch bites.
Giorgina Venzin has created a menu that offers the best bites of Pawpaw’s Balinese and Thailand-inspired menu. Patrons can get caffeinated with expertly brewed cups of Veneziano coffee, or they can opt for colourful beetroot, matcha or turmeric lattes. A collection of vibrant smoothies and bowls are available, with the bowls topped with a range of fresh fruit and an adorable assortment of edible words to help you truly embody your mantras. Savoury breakfast bites include smashed avocado with fetta and turmeric hummus, garden bowls filled with cauliflower, sweet potato, and raw spinach, croissant benedict with turmeric hollandaise, Nutella French Toast and potato hash cakes. As the day wears on, a selection of lunch options become available, including beef burgers, naan quesadillas, Pad Thai and fish and chips. All menu items can be packed up for takeaway, but be sure to check out the sandwich and treat cabinet and its selection of grab-and-go bites.
