K.O. your tastebuds at King Street’s video game-inspired burger joint Super Combo

Whether you’re a skilled Nintendo master or just frantically mash the buttons hoping for the best, it’s always a pretty rad feeling when you pull off a video game super combo. Victory, at last, is yours! Taking inspiration from late 1980s and 1990s fighting games (think Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, Tekken) King Street’s Super Combo – a burger joint with a distinct retro vibe – is mastering the super combo skill, but in a much more delicious manner.

The space
The aptly named Super Combo comes from Melbourne duo Michael Nham and Hao Vu – the brains behind Albert Park’s NSHRY. As kids Michael (also owner and head chef of Melbourne’s Banoi) and Hao spent hours upon hours playing Street Fighter at their local takeaway shop, and drew on this memory when creating the Super Combo concept. Despite its small space the burger joint certainly packs a punch, with bright colours used throughout the space and an army of fighting video game characters descending from the ceiling, watching over diners as they decide on their burger of choice. There’s also plenty to keep you occupied while you wait for your burg – pull up a stool to play a fighting game on the old-school Nintendo, or browse the vast selection of unique sauces from around the world to pair with your fries – there’s everything from Beaver Brand Coney Island Hot Dog Mustard to Saigon Charlie’s Vietnam Smoked Chili Sauce. Head to The Street Photographer for a closer look!

The food and drink
The space isn’t the only thing about Super Combo that takes inspiration from video games – much like Street Fighter features characters from around the world with distinct fighting styles, each burger has a ‘country of origin’ and its own unique flavour and game-themed name. Heralding from the USA, Round 1 combines a beef patty with onion, pickle, gruyere cheese, ketchup and American mustard, while Round 2 steps it up with the addition of parmesan butter, baby cos lettuce, roasted tomato and kewpie mayo. The Electric Thunder from Brazil features a beef patty with gruyere cheese, caramelised onion, baby cos lettuce, roasted green pepper chimichurri, guacamole, kewpie mayo and spicy tomato relish, and the Yoga Blast from India caters for vegetarians, stacked with a crispy spiced potato patty, capsicum relish, caramelised onion, roasted green pepper chimichurri, baby cos lettuce and cream cheese. Chicken lovers will be pleased also – go for the USA’s Sonic Boom, with crispy fried chicken, smoky mushroom sauce, gruyere cheese, maple-candied kaiserfleisch bacon, pineapple chutney and cabbage slaw. Pair your burg with ‘side kicks’ such as fries, onion rings and salad – all of which have the option to be loaded with more deliciousness. Super Combo serves up beer, cider and the usual non-alcoholic bevs, as well as shakes and super shakes – think cookies and cream, and salted caramel and pretzel.
