Snack on succulent skewers at Fortitude Valley’s Tatsu Yakitori Bar

Bao buns and ramen and salmon donburi, gyoza and tofu and sparkling sake, sashimi and curry and a skewer or three, these are a few of our favourite things! Chinatown Mall scored itself a sweet Christmas present in late 2016 when Tatsu Yakitori Bar opened its doors. If all of the above make your mouth water to some degree, then do yourself a solid and investigate this place thoroughly.

Shrouded behind a tinted glass facade is Tatsu Yakitori Bar – what could be Fortitude Valley’s newest worst-kept secret, thanks in part to the seductive scent of charcoal-grilled chicken wafting out into the Chinatown Mall. While we were all celebrating the festive season and the arrival of the New Year, Tastu quietly opened with little fanfare on Duncan Street – offering a tasty selection of Japanese eats and drinks to those who succumb to curiosity. The team behind Izakana-Ya Okuman are the masterminds of this new venue, which boasts a vibrant interior vibe that blends Australian bar and Japanese yakitori-ya aesthetics. Patrons can pick a seat underneath Japanese murals along the walls or perch at the bar and watch the experienced chefs go to work.

The menu runs the gamut of popular Japanese morsels – we’re talking the greatest hits here. Mouth-watering charsiu pork-belly baos, scrumptious sashimi, crispy pan-fried gyoza, yummy yakisoba and ridiculous ramen (the bowl is bigger than your head) are just a fraction of the bites available. Tatsu wouldn’t be a yakitori bar if it didn’t also offer a decent selection of char-grilled meats. Thankfully, you don’t have anything to worry about – Tastu serves up skewers of chicken meatball, pork belly, wagyu beef and even four kinds of vegetable skewers for meat-free eaters. As we all know, eating tends to work up a thirst – Tatsu’s bar stocks quenching beverages including Asahi on tap, Japanese beers, plum wine, shochu, sake, Japanese whisky and a range of custom cocktails.

Start the year off right – find Tastu Yakitori Bar in the Stumble Guide and make tracks to Chinatown post-haste.
