The Fifth Season Cafe serves up Japanese-inspired brunch in South Brisbane

Last year – on Christmas Eve, no less – South Brisbane's brand-new specialty coffee spot softly opened for business. Since its festive opening, The Fifth Season Cafe has quietly been dispensing top-notch brew while it prepped its first full menu. Now, owner Kevin Kim is about to show Brisbane what he’s been cooking up – a stylish play on brunch that imbues classic dishes with a delightful injection of Japanese flavours and presentation.

Kevin Kim has spent the past five years opening and managing cafes for others – now it’s his turn at the helm. With more than a decade of hospitality and coffee experience under his belt, Kevin has taken his accumulated knowledge and applied them to his new venture – The Fifth Season Cafe in South Brisbane. Tucked away from the suburb’s major traffic arteries on Edmondstone Street, Kevin has repurposed the venue (formerly home to Chit Chat Bite & Beer) into a sunny nook for coffee and brunch, complete with aesthetic touches such as sakura blossoms and lush greenery. As we all know, Earth only has four seasons, but Kevin’s cafe is all about giving a little bit extra – in this case the cafe looks to offer an elevated coffee service and a menu that combines fresh locally sourced ingredients with a captivating Japanese spin.

South Brisbane locals that have been seeking another specialty coffee option in close vicinity will be stoked with what The Fifth Season Cafe is bringing to the area. Kevin has recruited Sydney’s Seven Miles as the cafe’s coffee of choice, selecting its floral Wilde blend for its house pour. Single origins will rotate fortnightly, with coffee available in espresso, cold brew and pour-over varieties. Kevin has also assembled a selection of creative drinks for those looking to branch out from their regular pick, such as dirty matcha lattes infused with espresso, cold-brew with whipped milk and dark cacao, green-tea variants, and refreshing mango puree paired with a hit of coffee. Next week The Fifth Season Cafe will unveil its full menu, introducing seasonal brunch options with slight Japanese tweaks. Showstoppers include the karaage benedict with fried karaage chicken, kewpie hollandaise, house-ground nuts on a fresh croissant (all pastries are made on site), smoked salmon with dill-pickled cucumber and crispy duck leg ramen noodle salad. Other Japanese touches will include Japanese-style fried potatoes instead of hash browns and liberal sprinklings of Japanese green pepper. Dog lovers will also have a reason to bring along their furry friend – Kevin will be adding a dog-friendly breakfast to the menu, including biscuits and treats for hungry pooches.
